Director Ron Howard's brother Clint Howard (also seen in "The Wraith" as "Rughead") can be seen as one of the staff at the retirement home.

His mother also takes a turn as one of the old folks at the retirement home and his father as an official. They all appear in Cocoon!

Don Ameche won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1985.

Cocoon ranked sixth in the 1985 year's box office receipts (Back to the Future was No. 1).

Oscars were awarded later for the pre-CGI special effects and to Ameche for best supporting actor.

Wilford Brimley was only 49, at least 20 years younger than the other "retirees" when hired for Cocoon.

He is a former stuntman and bodyguard for Howard Hughes.

As of 2015, he is the only one of the elderly cast still alive.

Don Ameche was 76. He passed away December 6, 1993

Maureen Stapleton was 59. She passed away March 13, 2006

Jessica Tandy was 75. She passed away September 11, 1994

Hume Cronyn was 73. He passed away June 15, 2003

Gwen Verdon was 59. She passed away October 18, 2000

Jack Gilford was 76. He passed away June 4, 1990

Herta Ware was 67. She passed away August 15, 2005

Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy played Joe and Alma Finley.

In real life the couple were married for 52 years until her death in 1994.
