Transformers: The Movie (1986)

Transformers: The Movie Movie Poster
O

n a distant planet, sometime in the near future, live two warring factions of robots.

The peaceful Autobots, led by the heroic Optimus Prime, are fighting a losing battle against the evil Decepticons, led by the maniacal and power-hungry Megatron. If the Autobots fail to protect their city, then all is lost and their doom is sealed. Even the courageous humans that fight alongside them will surely perish.

Sensing the onslaught, Optimus Prime faces Megatron alone. A fierce battle ensues between the two leaders and, ultimately, Optimus Prime wins and the Decepticons retreat. But Optimus is mortally wounded, and (in his dying moments) hands over the mantle of leadership to his oldest and most trusted companion, in the form of a glowing jewel, which holds the spirits of all previous leaders.

Legend has it that when the Autobots face their darkest hour, a warrior shall rise up and use the power of this 'Matrix' to dispense with the evil for good. The Decepticons, however, have their own problems. Their leader is also mortally wounded, along with a good few more. There is a vote of survival of the fittest and the injured party are thrown into space and abandoned, Megatron included.

Meanwhile, deep in space, there is another menace approaching the Autobot home planet in the form of the almighty Unicron, a huge transforming space station that consumes entire planets, and leaves little but debris in it's wake. The previously jettisoned Megatron and his badly injured cronies are met by Unicron and given an ultimatum: destroy the Autobots and their Matrix of leadership, or carry on into oblivion. In return, they are given new bodies, weapons and names with which to carry out their task.

On Cybertron, the self- appointed new leader of the Decepticons has a rather short coronation when Megatron (in his new guise of Galvatron) and his new warriors arrive, turning the usurper into nothing but dust.

The Autobots are the next target of Galvatron and after a one-sided battle, manage to crash land their escape ship on Junkticon, a planet made of (you guessed it) scrap metal. Here, Ultra Magnus, the new leader of the Autobots (appointed by Optimus) is blown to pieces and loses the Matrix to Galvatron. The hopes of the Autobots reaches an all-time low, but all is not lost when the inhabitants of the planet befriend and repair the fallen Ultra Magnus and his injured comrades.

Unicron summons Galvatron before him and obtains the Matrix, but a treacherous Galvatron comes unstuck and is swallowed along with the Autobots' only salvation. Now begins a race against time if the Autobots are to succeed in defeating the monstrous planet-cruncher once and for all.

Did you know?

A new Transformers film was released in 2007, with the tagline "Their war. Our world". It was directed by Michael Bay and written by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and John Rogers.

Transformers was one of three planned films, along with 'My Little Pony' and 'G.I. Joe'. Sunbow planned it wrong, releasing Pony first, and then Transformers second, both failing at the box office. G.I. Joe was immediately sent straight to video. -Thanks to Michael Manzano

When Sunbow was in the production stage of the movie 'G.I. Joe: The Movie' they first came up with the idea to kill off a lead character since the Duke action figure was planned to be discontinued. The writers for Transformers took the same idea, killing off Optimus Prime --but it resulted in a backlash, with parents outraged due to the traumatization of their children watching such drama in a theatrical cartoon. G.I. Joe's writers were forced to rewrite Duke's death to a critical injury! -Thanks to Michael Manzano

Both Casey Kasem and Scatman Crothers appear as cameo voices.

Orson Welles did the voice for Unicron. He sadly passed after making Transformers the Movie. -Thanks to Rick Barkhouse

In Italy Autobots were called "Autorobots", Decepticons became "Distructors", and the Italian name of Optimus Prime is Commander. -Thanks to Giorgio

Scatman Crothers (The Shining-original version) was the voice of Jazz, sadly this was the last movie he played in before his death. -Thanks to Cliff Coleman

Oh Sh*t was edited out of the movie when Spike says it after he blows up the moon to stop Unicron. Instead there is a pause before the next phrase "What are we going to do now?" -Thanks to Cliff Coleman

The voice of Blurr, John Moschitta Jr, holds the Guiness World record of "fastest talker." He is also the Micro Machines spokesman. -Thanks to Cliff Coleman

The script was written 2 years before the new Autobot characters were introduced in 1984 and 85. -Thanks to Cliff Coleman

Eric Idle of Monty Python fame also lends his vocal talents as Wreck-Gar. -Thanks to Tom Widdows

Optimus Prime originally was not going to return but when they decided to bring him back they re-did the episode "Dark Awakening".

The Movie is refered to as "Till all are One" in some other countries.

Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Michael Bell, Chris Latta and Gregg Berger are in G.I. Joe and transformers movies! -Thanks to Skyknight0079

Ultra Magnus is Optimus Prime's brother hence the reason the figure was a white Optimus Prime that hooks into the trailer.

In the scene where the Dinobots attack Devastator, Devastator hits Sludge over the head. As he does so, Sludge's eyes pop out of his head and land back in his sockets in a classic Tom & Jerry slapstick style! This is totally out-of-keeping with the style of the rest of the movie, so it must be a joke slipped in by the animators. -Thanks to Paul L

Cybertron holds the esscence of Primus the brother of Unicron.

Look closely, before the launcher scene, you will see Wheeljack and Wind Charger dead. (from Season 1 and 2)

Starscream comes back as a ghost in Season 3.

In the scene with autobot city when Galvatron attacks, you can see Snarl (Stegosaur Dinobot) running from laser fire. He is not anywhere else in the movie! -Thanks to SKyknight0079

The voice for Galvatron was Leonard Nimoy who also played Spock from "Star Trek". -Thanks to Kevin

Peter Cullen, the voice actor who plays Optimus Prime, also played Prime in the TV series the movie was based on. Cullen honestly had no idea how popular the character was until the public backlash over Optimus Prime's death in the movie, as the studio never sent him any of the fan mail addressed to Prime. But to this day, he consistently cites Optimus Prime as his absolute favorite role. He had a rare chance to reprise this role in the 2007 film Transformers, a 'reimagining' of the original classic.

There are two goofs with the matrix. When Optimus Prime gives the matrix to Ultra Magnus he visibly puts it into his chest twice and when Rodimus Prime unleashes the matrix he opens it twice. -Thanks to Travis Dao

When the decepticons attack autobot city, there is a part when Starscream's foot gets caught in the workings of the base while it is (I think) transforming? He shoots his foot to free himself but later in the same attack his foot is fine. -Thanks to Mark Anderson

A heart-pounding soundtrack of heavy rock that captures the spirit of the excellent animation. Use our search feature to locate a copy. Track listing:

1. The Touch - Stan Bush
2. Instruments Of Destruction - N.R.G.
3. Death Of Optimus Prime - Vince DiCola
4. Dare - Stan Bush
5. Nothin's Gonna Stand In Our Way - Spectre General
6. The Transformers (Theme) - Lion
7. Escape - Vince DiCola
8. Hunger - Spectre General
9. Autobot/Decepticon Battle - Vince DiCola
10. Dare To Be Stupid - 'Weird Al' Yankovic

The great song that keeps coming back throughout the movie is called "The Touch" and is an 80's hit performed by Stan Bush. However, in the 1997 blockbuster "Boogie Nights" you can hear Mark Wahlberg trying to make a recording in the movie using the same song. At first, you think that Mark is just making the song up since he is using the funniest sentences like "You got the touch, you got the power" "You're nobody's fool" "You're a winner". But seeing Transformers and realising that the song isn't a joke, really surprises you. But then again, as you hear the song in this incredible artful animated picture, you realise that it was a song with meaning. -Thanks to Gustaf L

Vince DiCola and Stan Bush often appear at Botcon, and other Transformers conventions. Vince has a band that actually goes to these things to play and sell music from the film. Vince released a second soundtrack for the movie, which you can purchase at these rare concerts. Songs like, "Ground Zero" featuring Stan Bush can be heard on this new compilation. -Thanks to The Saint

The Weird Al Yankovic song, "Dare to Be Stupid" is the background music for the sequence where the Transformers are dancing in the junkyard. -Thanks to Sarah Troiano

The excellent music of Vince DiCola can also be heard on the Rocky IV movie sountrack. The DVD includes a rare interview with DiCola. For "TF: TM," he was asked by producers Sunbow to submit a piece of music as a tryout. He was hired on the basis of that piece, even though it was never actually used in the final score. -Thanks to William K. Scurry Jr

The name of the music piece Vince DiCola did was "Legacy".

There are two versions of the theme for the Transformers movie. They are the version you hear in the film by Lion, and a different version that was a colaboration between Vince DiCola and Stan Bush. It is available on the album 'Till All Are One' which was released at a Transformers convention. -Thanks to Adam

Excellent sound, animation and storyline that keeps the viewer interested.
The voice acting is also well scripted and executed.
-
Maybe too much of a 'blast from the past' for younger children and the names of characters may prove a little confusing, but these are very minor quibbles.
