(1987) |
n BEVERLY HILLS COP II, Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley, the resourceful Detroit detective who doesn't exactly play by the rules.
When his friend from the first "Beverly Hills Cop" picture, Lieutenant Andrew Bogomil (Ronny Cox), is wounded in an event related to mysterious "alphabet crimes," Foley hightails it to California and hooks up again with officers Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) in an effort to stop the robberies.
But they have to deal with an abusive new Lieutenant Harry Lutz (Allen Garfield). Along the way, their investigation into the crimes leads them to a strip club, the Playboy mansion, and even a racetrack.
Director Tony Scott's ("CRIMSON TIDE", "TOP GUN") film offers a wild ride as Foley talks his way into and out of various scenarios.
Watch for comedian Chris Rock's feature-film debut in his brief appearance as the parking valet and for Paul Reiser as Jeffrey Freidman, Axel's partner in Detroit.
Not as good as the first "Beverly Hills Cop"Beverly Hills Cop", but it is a good sequel and way better than the third installment.
Don't forget that Beverly Hills Cop II is now available to order on Widescreen DVD using our special 80s Retro Assistant...

| | | | Basically this movie is almost a rehash of the first one but it was brilliantly shot and the action scenes are my favourite action scenes of all time.

Beverly Hills Cop II was the first ever motion picture to film on the grounds of the Playboy mansion.

Actor Bronson Pinchot was originally slated to reprise the role of Serge, but wasn't willing to let his sitcom "Perfect Strangers" go on hiatus (as Bronson tells it, the filmmakers may have gotten the series cancelled entirely to sign him, but he found that unacceptable and refused to appear). He did play Serge again in Beverly Hills Cop 3, a year after "Perfect Strangers" ended its run. -Thanks to C.T. Warren
An enormous amount of the comedy was improvised.
Axel (Eddie Murphy) introduces himself at the gun club as "Richard James", the name of Murphy's musician friend who produced his 1986 album.
Billy Rosewood has posters in his apartment of "Rambo: First Blood Part 2" (1985) and "Cobra" (1986), both starring Sylvester Stallone. Stallone's then-wife Brigitte Nielsen appears in the film as Karla Fry and Stallone was the original choice to play the lead. "Beverly Hills Cop" (1984).
The cement truck Billy drives has a sticker saying DS/JB Construction Company. DS and JB stand for the film's producers, Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer.
Chris Rock made his film debut in this movie as the parking valet at the Playboy Mansion.
Hugh Hefner makes a cameo as himself.
Using Super Glue fumes to develop fingerprints creates a white fingerprint, not a black one.
If you watch the end credits all the way through, there's a credit for a guy named Dick Ritchie -- the name of a memorable character played by Michael Rappaport in another Tony Scott flick, "True Romance" (which was written by Quentin Tarantino) -Thanks to Peter Beary

| | | | The development of Beverly Hills Cop II was initiated immediately after the studio screening of the original. Paramount knew that they had a big hit on their hands even then. Along the way, the concept changed to a TV series, but Murphy had no intention of doing it and the producers couldn't find anyone to fill Eddie's shoes, so the production reverted to a sequel. Originally developed to be filmed in Paris or London, (hence the jewel thief theme), Eddie scotched that with his desire to stay in LA.
In the intro, when Axel Foley is driving to the office in the Ferrari, two different models are used. In the beginning, and at the end, he's driving a 328, but during the action sequence in between, it's a 308 (an older model).
