The development of Beverly Hills Cop II was initiated immediately after the studio screening of the original. Paramount knew that they had a big hit on their hands even then. Along the way, the concept changed to a TV series, but Murphy had no intention of doing it and the producers couldn't find anyone to fill Eddie's shoes, so the production reverted to a sequel. Originally developed to be filmed in Paris or London, (hence the jewel thief theme), Eddie scotched that with his desire to stay in LA.
