I was wondering what phrases or words everyone used in the 80s. I know allot of people said "dude" and after Valley Girl came out we all said "like" among other things. But is there anything interesting that you used to say that might not be as well known as the ones I just said?

I used to talk like a surfer/stoner (which is what I was). Not as bad as spicoli, which was actually my nickname in college. When a girl was good looking, we would say..."Damn! That girl is FINE!"

The word totally was used a lot. In junior high, hoser was said a lot, could be a Canada or Strange Brew thing. Dork and dweeb were used a lot more than know as well.

Well growing up in 80s Southern California we had a well known vencular. Of course "dude" and "man", "gnarly", a weird one was "waste", which meant cool for some reason. If something was digusting it was "Ohhhh sick!". But of course the king of them all: "Rad!"

No RAD was the word! haha. My brother had his own language..I'll have to try and remember it, it was so hilarious, everyone was a Boner, and not like they mean now, and he called a mountain dew a dewslam, and had words for everything. He used to change the message on our answering machine each week, it was funny.
I remember always calling someone a sped, or a scrub.
We used the: hey, you hosehead lingo also. Like take-off, eeh.

I'd just like to say that I am a regular user of the words YO and DUDE and of course COOL .I am also rather partial to the phrase THAT IS COOL AND THE GANG ,I believe I have Mr.Tarantino to thank for that one. Another one I just remembered is "poser", which I still have no idea what it is. Posers and hosers, no clue 20 years later heh heh.

A poser is someone who was trying to be something they were not. That term was used to describe a lot of the 80's metal hair bands...They were "posers" because they looked like girls, (or so some people said!!) The most common one I heard use to describe someone they did not like was F*G..or dork...I hear teens using that one now and have to chuckle because I don't think half of them know what it means...

I cleaned out our ferret's cage earlier, and I heard the words "gag me with a spoon!" come out of my mouth!!! I think being on here, has had quite an effect on me.

Ha ha that's funny! Remember that song Frank Zappa and his daughter did called Valley Girl? I think it came out around the same time s the movie. If I'm correct I think it was sort of a parody of VG. Anyway, that would be an interesting phrase to brng back, wouldn't it?

This is sad to say, but my friends and I used terminology from the movie "Top Gun". You name it we lived it, well except for the 30 million dollar plane. We were 21 years old and substituted our cars for planes and meeting new people was our mission. It's cheesy NOW, but back in 1986 & 1987 "Top Gun" was consider cool.
"I feel the need for SPEED!" "She's lost that lovin' feeling" "Son your ego's writing checks your body can't cash" "Relax about the Mig" "I'll hit the brakes and he'll fly right by" "Have you figured it out yet? ... Who's the best pilot?"

I was a little prepubescent punk rock delinquent in the mid to late eighties so I said the F-word quite a bit.
The characters I could identify myself with were Chris Chambers in Stand By Me, John Bender in The Breakfast Club (a junior high version, anyway) all the TR kids in Suburbia, and the greasers in The Outsiders.
So yeah, maybe a "dude" here and there, but I just pretty much had a potty mouth. I would quote alot of my favorite movies too.
Gary (Hall) in Weird Science had alotta lines I liked to quote.

Well, Cos im a Londoner i probably have completely different e.g If something was good it was 'REEM', If something was bad it was 'SWAG', If something was moody (not real) it was 'JEKYLL' (jekyll & hyde= Snide)
And if someone was being thick they were called a 'PLUM'.
I remember these words being around when i was little, dont hear them much any more.
