The movie was filmed in 1984 but, after a limited release, wasn't released on video until 1988 in the USA. It did make it into more cinemas in Europe.
This movie is supposed to be a follow up to the 1964 classic bad movie Santa Claus Conquers The Martian's, which also starred
Pia Zadora in her first ever movie role.
The movie was actually released in theaters in the USA. I still possess the uber ultra cool "I Took The Voyage Of The Rock Aliens" pin that was given out on opening weekend. (Maybe that's why the movie didn't turn a profit?). Anyways, it's still residing on my (also uber ultra cool) Lita Ford concert neckerchief. Go figure.
This was the last of three movies that were supposed to launch
Pia Zadora as an actress. The others where "Butterfly" (1980), and "The Lonely Lady" (1982). They all bombed at the box office. "Butterfly" won her a Golden Globe for best newcomer in 1980 but her success was overshadowed by rumours that her multimillionaire husband had bought her the award.
