Sadly, Divine passed away after before the movie premiered. He went to LA to begin filming "MARRIED WITH CHILDREN" as Uncle Otto. While in LA he died in his sleep from chest pains. He then was transported back to Towson, Maryland and his funeral service was at Ruck Funeral Home. He was loved and sorely missed by everyone.
Rikki Lake also appeared in two other John Waters films: "Serial Mom" (as the daughter) and "Cry Baby" with Johnny Depp (she played Pepper, his sister). Mr Pinky also played the pervy photograper in "Cry Baby".
was also in Cecil B Demented, she played Honey Whitlock's assistant.
Toussaint McCall, the performer at Motormouth Maybelle's party, was played by the real Toussaint McCall.
Jerry Stiller played Wilbur Turnblad in the 1988 Hairspray movie and Mr Pinky in the 2007 Hairspray movie.
Hairspray was Divine's second to last film. His last film was Out of the Dark in 1989.

Holter Ford Graham played I.Q Jones and is now the President of the NY Chapter of the union AFTRA. Kim Webb played Carmelita who's dance partner was played by actor Vincent De Paul. Micheal St. Gerard was the orginal Link Larkin.
Divine, Tracy Turnblad's mother, also played Mr Hodgepile, the boss of the Corny Collins Show.

Tracy's dad is played by the same man who plays George's dad in Seinfeld, Jerry Stiller.
Colleen Fitzpatrick, who played the snotty girl Amber, went on to be a successful singer, first with the band Eve's Plumb and then as the artist Vitamin C.

John Waters has a habit of using the same cast members. All the main players in his movies have been in at least 2, in some cases 5 or more of his other movies. Mink Stole has been in every movie he has made to date including his new one to be released in 2004.

"The Corny Collins Show" was based on a real television show called "The Buddy Deane Show"
"Tilted Acres" was based on "Gwynn Oak Amusement Park" in Baltimore County, MD, where racial problems occured.
The dance "The Madison" was an original Baltimore dance. The Buddy Deane Committee Dancers introduced the dance on Buddy's TV show and some of the committee members even today, teach the dance to a new generation.

guest star as Beatnik Cat and Beatnik Chick.
"HairSpray" was also known under the working title "White Lipstick".

, who played Tracy's boyfriend Link, went on to appear as a young Elvis Presley in two separate productions: "Great Balls of Fire," the story of Jerry Lee Lewis, and "Elvis: The Early Years," a short-lived biographical series on ABC.

Ricki Lake is in both versions of Hairspray. In 1988 she plays the part of Tracy Turnblad. In 2007 she is briefly seen as the part of one of the talent agents in the audience during the Ms. Teen Hairspray dance-off.
I'm sure that in the scene where Amber and Link come out from the studio and get into the car, in the group of fans is Wendy James, lead singer of Transvision Vamp.

The real Buddy Deane makes a cameo as a reporter asking questions to the governor at his mansion.
Apparently, when Ricki Lake first met Divine, she did not know that Divine was really a man.
Josh Charles who plays one of the committee member (Iggy), was also in "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" and "S.W.A.T."
Jerry Stiller who playes Tracy's dad, also plays Mr. Pinky (Owner Of The Hefty Hideaway") in the 2007 version of Hairspray.
