Courtney Gains played Malachai in The Children of the Corn." He also is now a singer and has made a CD.
In the scene where Ray and Art break into Walter Seznick's house, there is a picture on the table of Walter with Lucille Ball. Ball and Gale Gordon were co-stars of the 1948 radio show "My Favorite Husband" and the TV shows "The Lucy Show", "Here's Lucy", and "Life with Lucy".
Early in the movie, when Ray's son Dave is eating breakfast, a box of Gremlins cereal can be seen on the kitchen counter in the background. The Burbs' director Joe Dante also directed Gremlins.

In the scene where Art and Ray hold the femur bone which they think belongs to Walter, Rick Ducommun looks like he's about to lose it and laugh just after they both stop screaming.

Rick Ducommun, who plays Art Weingartner in the flick, is the co-founder of the legendary canadian skateboard company and classic eighties skateboard pioneer, Skull Skates. Rick started this company with his brother Peter in 1978, it was then called Great North Country Skateboards, Peter now owns the company. In the movie, Ricky Butler's friend Steve (played by Nicki Katt) can be seen sporting the classic Skull Skates t-shirt.

Rick Ducommun who plays Art Weingartner can be seen in a very funny role in 2000's "Scary Movie" where he plays Cindy's dad.

The Demonology book Ray and Art are reading was written by "Julian Karswell", the lead bad guy/Satan worshipper from the classic 1957 film, Curse of the Demon, directed by Jacques Tourneur.

Courtney Gains, who plays Hans Klopek, was also featured in "Back to the Future" at the 'Enchantement Under the Sea Dance' as Mark Dixon, the student who cut in on George McFly's dance with Lorraine. BTTF was also shot primarily near the same Hollywood back lot as The 'Burbs.

Brother Theodore, who plays Ruben Kolpeck, is most famous for his role as the voice of the creature Gollum in the Bass and Rankin early 80's animated versions of THE HOBBIT and THE RETURN OF THE KING under the name Theodore.

During their visit to the Klopeks house Bruce Dern (Who plays Mark Rumsfeld) is wearing a US Marine Corps "Alpha" Blouse complete with belt and buckle. This uniform is traditionally worn by Marines upon checking in to a new unit. However there are no forms of insignia anywhere on the blouse.

In the scene where everyone goes to visit the Klopek's, as Bonnie opens the door to find the uncle standing behind it, there is a nude on the wall directly behind him. It looks to be a shadow of one, or either faintly painted on the wall.

Brother Theodore was notorious for his guest spots on "Late Night with David Letterman". He dressed and acted much the same as his character in "The Burbs".

Robert Picardo who plays one of the garbage men also plays the holographic doctor in Star Trek Voyager.
Gale Gorder (Walter) also starred in the 1950's TV show 'Dennis the Menace' as Mr. Wilson's brother.

Dana Olsen was also in the movie "Making The Grade" released in 1984. He plays Palmer Woodrow, a wealthy kid that pays a bum (played by Judd Nelson) money to go to school of him.
One or more of the houses have featured in many productions besides Desperate Housewives. These include The Munsters (the Munster's own house was the one used as Ricky Butler's house), Dragnet (the movie not the series), Back To The Future Part II, Murder She Wrote , Quantum Leap, Casper A Spirited Beginning, Buffy The Vampire Slayer & Providence.

Incorrect Trivia
What follows are trivia items we now believe are bogus. Some of them will have explanations, some will not. We just leave 'em in for interest, really.
Early on in the film when Art is eating breakfast in the Peterson house, he eats some of Vinces dog food by mistake, then washes the taste out of his mouth. He also puts an empty container of syrup/juice back in the fridge and pulls out a new one.
