Director Paul Schrader co-wrote the story and screenplay for Martin Scorsese's '76 classic "Taxi Driver". Schrader's directorial debut was the '78 urban drama "Blue Collar", starring Richard Pryor. Schrader would go on to direct Michael J. Fox in "Light of Day" in 1987.

John Travolta was offered this role first but due to a "no nudity" policy, turned it down. Gere seems to be Travolta's clean up man grabbing parts in "Days of Heaven," "An Officer and a Gentleman" and "Chicago" after Travolta turned them down.

"American Gigolo" is actually a remake of a 1960 French film (directed by Jean-Luc Godard) called "Breathless". A later 80s Richard Gere movie title!

The information is incorrect. "Breathless" is actually a remake of Jean-Luc Godard's À bout de souffle from 1963. American Gigolo is based on Robert Bresson's "Pickpocket".
