(1988) |
here was quite a fear in the 80's about babies being switched at birth. Now take this fear and turn it into a comedy about the rich against the poor. About twins against twins. And just for kicks throw in Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin.
Combine all of these and what will you get? An outrageous 80's comedy of course! So grab some refreshments, sit back, and enjoy another great from those people who brought us "Ruthless People".
In the 1940s in a small town of Jupiter Hollow, a rich man and his snooty wife get stuck with no Hospital for them to have their baby(s). You see the only Hospital in town is for employees of the Hollowmade factory. So Mr. Shelton buys the Hollowmade factory and Mrs. Shelton is taken to a delivery room.
At the same time Mr. and Mrs. Ratliff come to the Hospital to have their baby(s). Unfortunately for both couples there is an old senial nurse named Nanny. After each couple has had there first child and are on to the second, Nanny gets confused and switches the kids. Also Mr. Ratliff, after hearing Mr. Shelton name his girls Rose and Sadie, decides his girls will be named the same.
Now it is 1988 and Sadie Shelton is a ruthless money hungry witch, and the head of the company. She wants to sell the Hollowmade Factory, but the people in Jupiter Hollow won't hear of it. They are sending Rose, the snake, Ratliff to New York to kick some snooty butt. There is no time like the present for these twins to meet.
What will happen to these twins when they finally meet Face to Face...?
All I have to say is get ready for some BIG laughs from "Big Business"!

| | | | Like the other great films from Touchstone and Bette Midler (Ruthless people, Outrageous Fortune, and Down and out in Beverly Hills), Big Business is a great 80's film.
It is a timeless classic in my eyes. If I am having a bad day I can sit back turn on my VCR and relax with the comic mix up that both Lily and Bette deliver. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Seen about two-thirds of the way through the credits: "Don't Go, It's Almost Over."
In the hotel scenes, Lily Tomlin is featured wearing a concert T-Shirt from rock star Tina Turner's 1985 "Break Every Rule" tour. -Thanks to Amy Green
The boy in the toy store who plays Bette Midler's son is a very young Seth Green from "Can't Buy Me Love", "Austin Powers" & "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" fame. -Thanks to Mark Campbell
In the scene where Bette Midler makes her first appearance in NYC, notice how the statue in the elevator lobby is positioned to look like it's shielding itself from her. -Thanks to Tony
Throughout the scenes inside the Plaza Hotel there is a lady with a dog whose wardrobe changes with each dog color. She is initially seen wearing a white dress with a white dog in the scene where Sadie and Rose Ratliff first enter the Plaza. Then she is seen wearing a brown dress with a brown dog and finally a black dress with a black dog. -Thanks to Gabe King
Notice how Sadie's jacket in New York is cut - now look at Sadie's jacket from Jupiter Hollow - the red plaid one. It's the same cut. Also, in Jupiter Hollow, how could Sadie's hair be pulled back and curled into all those ringlets when wearing it down it's a short bob? It's a beautiful Disney Films custom wig for Ms. Midler. -Thanks to Tony
Notice subtle costume similarities in the characters. When New York Sadie goes to dinner with Fabio she is wearing a black bodiced bell-dress with red wrap and skirting. Then, when Jupiter Hollow Sadie walks up to the concierge desk, she has a red wrap around HER black bodiced dress. From the chest up they look the same to the concierge! -Thanks to Tony
Did you see the Triplets trying to check into the hotel??

| | | | To get into character as the ditzy Rose Ratliff, Lily Tomlin once said that just before cameras rolled to shoot a scene, she would twirl around in circles until she got dizzy. This helped her better capture the "air-headed" qualities of Rose. -Thanks to Patrick Fogerty
Right when the Jupiter Hollow Sadie walks into FAO Shwartz, she already has a bag from their store. You know it is the first time she enters the store because she is amazed at the sight of it.
Also, towards the end of the movie when the two Roses are trying to hold down the New York Sadie, one scene shows the New York Rose's hand holding Sadie's arm down toward the elbow and the scene immediately following shows the New York Rose holding Sadie's same arm near the top of her arm. The editing on those two scenes was overlooked. -Thanks to Maggie
When Bette Midler walks off the elevator - she is wearing flesh colored hosiery. Later, in her office we see her in black hosiery. -Thanks to Tony

Locations |
|
| | | The scenes where both women are being driven to the hospital to have the babies were filmed in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee (made famous by Daniel Boone). It's a small town with a population of 210 and is located where the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia all meet. The building on the corner used to be a bank, a general store and a hardware store and is now a restaurant called the "Ye Olde Tea and Coffee Shoppe" or "The Tea Room" as us locals like to call it. Also, the first shot of the movie was filmed in Cumberland Gap from a place called the Pinnacle which is a look-out on top of the Appalachian Mountains. [Thanks to Bethany]
The hotel the sisters were staying in was the famous "Plaza Hotel" located on 58th Street and 5th Ave in New York -right next to Central Park. The interior Plaza Hotel scenes were filmed on soundstages in MGM Studios, Florida.
The toy store where Bette Midler runs into her sister's son and husband is none other than FAO Schwarz, which is located directly across the street from the "Plaza" and was also used in the film "Big". [Thanks to Mark Campbell]
The Plaza Hotel sets used in this movie later were used in the early 90s' Touchstone Television/NBC series "The Nutt House". Disney spent so much money on the sets that they felt they had to be used for future filming, and Mel Brooks (of "Spaceballs" and "Blazing Saddles" fame) had a deal at Disney at the time. The two met halfway, but the cost of set maintenance must've meant no money was left for good scripts. "Nutt House" was canceled after 6 episodes, and the sets went into storage at Disney-MGM Studios. [Thanks to John Edward Kilduff]
"Big Business" was also filmed on location in a wide variety of places including Kentucky, New York City, Ohio and Tennessee. Can anyone help?
Can you help? Do you know any of the (or any other) filming locations used for Big Business? [Please send them in]
| | | | | | Another great soundtrack from Touchstone. It included the smash hit "HIGHER LOVE" by Steve Winwood and, but as far as we know, was never released.
