My son is 8 and started getting into chess recently. He learned the rules by himself and watches some YouTube videos, but I’m wondering if it’s worth finding a coach at this stage. I don’t want to overdo it, just something to help him learn better. Do kids that age benefit from formal chess training?

I was in a similar situation with my daughter when she was 7. She was super into puzzles and chess apps, so we tried out lessons with a chess coach grandmaster who had experience working with young kids. I was surprised how well it worked. The coach kept things fun but structured - lots of mini-games, simple tactics, and even friendly online matches. It wasn’t just about openings or strategy, but also about discipline, focus, and enjoying the process. My daughter loved it and actually became more confident in school too. Worth trying at least a few sessions if the coach has the right experience with younger students.
