Warner Bros. and Bryan Singer are unsheathing "Excalibur," redoing the 1981 John Boorman movie about King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable.
The project is still in the early stages, with Warners only tying up the remake rights, which it shares with Boorman. Singer's involvement is still in the talking stage and Legendary Pictures may come aboard the project.
If deals are made, Singer would produce with Julie Yorn. Former Warner exec Polly Johnsen (formerly Cohen) would also produce.
Matt Reilly is overseeing for Warners while Erik Olsen, who instigated the project by contacting Boorman, shepherds for the Yorn company.
Alex Garcia, an executive at Legendary and Singer's former partner at Bad Hat, was instrumental in bringing in Singer. If Legendary comes aboard, Garcia would oversee.
The 1981 movie starred Nigel Terry as Arthur and Cherie Lunghi as Guenevere and featured early performances from Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart and Gabriel Byrne.

Good movie but how many different variations of the same story can they possibly do ? Even now with the King Arthur movie from a couple years ago with Keira Knightly, it just seems to water it down more and more as more variations are made. I say try to keep a classic a classic.

I always liked Boorman's Excalibur. He made it because he couldn't get to do Lord of the Rings. Now I would love to have seen his vision of Lord of the Rings.

A very undderated and enjoyable movie; this remake could work out quite well, Singer hasn't been part of a bad film yet.
I'd cast the following...

Interesting about Peter Jackson logan. I never knew that. I did just pick this up on dvd a few weeks back and have yet to watch it. Always felt like a good late fall on a rainy day type movie, so I am holding out a little while, but look forward to it.
I remember liking it quite a bit back then, so I hope it has aged well. I know what you mean johnny76 when you wonder how many time can they go back to the well and I think the last true version of it that you reference with Clive Owen a few years back was pretty flat.
Still if you want to keep introducing "middle age background" set movies, the Arthur/Excalibur/Camelot story line is just so rich and inviting I can see why they keep trying every decade or so. Excalibur is and always will be a classic (and I would even say a "hidden" classic), but I don't think further versions diminish the original anymore than Kevin Costner in any way diminished Errol Flynn's epic take on Robin Hood or Hillary Swank negating the classic Karate Kid with her next generation
