I've been googling for hours now, no luck, someone please help me.

I remember most distinctly there being a race of robots/andoids that wore metalic masks, with non-moving facial features. There was one shortish, maybe a child version of the robots who befriends or accompanys a man and woman(humans) for part of the film.

In one scene a few of the robots corner the child-sized robot, and mark a hole in his forehead with a powerdrill.

There was some desert scenes, I want to say it was a post-apocalyptic film? Really that's all I can remember.

Mid 80's, I believe I first saw it at a drive-in double billed with "short circuit 2," but I could be wrong. I was just a kid, and my parents have no recollection.

This has haunted me for years, if someone could name this film for me I would be eternally grateful.
