I've seen both movies. Trust me, Michelangelo Antonioni's "Blow Up" (from 1966) has NOTHING to do with "Blow Out". So, I don't think there's a rip-off involved.

The only thing the movies might have one thing in common is that photography is involved.

"Blow Up" is a truly bizarre movie, though!

Both have a similar premise (photographer/sound recordist seeing/hearing something they shouldn't) and both are very stylishly shot, but that's where the similarity ends.

DePalma often uses other films as templates for his own. For that reason some people call him a 'hack' or treat him like he's a bad Director. I personally like a lot of DePalma's films and don't really care whether 'Obsession' is similar to 'Vertigo', or that 'Body Double' is similar in plot to 'Rear Window'; a good film is a good film.

I like 'Blow Up', and even though it's very much a classic in its own right, I still prefer 'Blow Out'.
