The cast was not permitted to see the pirate ship before the filming of the scene where they find it. But, on the commentary of the new DVD release Corey Feldman admits that he and Sean Astin did see the pirate ship before the day of filming. They kidded the director that they didn't know because, even at that age, they were such good actors that they could fake their surprise!! It's well worth seeing the special DVD release to hear this commentary and their memories.

I recently watched the Goonies DVD with the commentary and found out that the kid that played "Chunk" in the movie had chicken pox while doing the part of the shuffle truffle and he didn't want to do the scene because he was afraid that they would fire him....he said that if you zoom it in on his stomach you can see where he had them!

The original poster art (not used on the video tape box) featured the cast dangling from the feet of one another with the top one hanging on a rock. Some of the newspaper ads featured slightly different artwork with the characters drawn in a different order from top to bottom. There were also several versions made up of the Goonies poster advertisement with the actors positioned differently from top to bottom.

Deleted Scenes

There are often scenes cut from the final version of a movie. Sometimes these will have been seen by preview audiences, or be included in Blu-ray or DVD extras etc.

The following missing scenes from The Goonies are believed legit. If you disagree or have additional info, please update us.

A scene they tried to shoot, but gave up on because it wasn't working, involved the kids finding a room filled with Gorillas (the Gorillas were men in suits).

Despite attempting to shoot it, no footage of the scene (either video or still) has appeared - unlike other cut scenes such as the 'Goonie Oath / Leech' scene. This may be because the footage was not deemed good enough to even enter the rough-cut, from which some early publicity material (and re-assembled TV versions) could be drawn.

There is a scene in the novel where - prior to the organ scene - they are escaping from the Fratelli's on a raft in a huge cavern. The cavern is full of mist so they can't see anything around them, and the raft just keeps floating in a certain direction.

The scene is used to allow each of the characters to reflect on what was happening, and they all wind up falling asleep.

Alot of Data's inventions were left on the cutting room floor (the actual footage has never been found but stills exist in promotional pictures) the intimidator (which caused Data to swell but, as with all inventions, backfires).

Also, data originally slipped on the log while using slick shoes (Mikey and Mouth head out to try and rescue him, leading to them all almost getting swept away) and the battery he used to electrocute the leeches was all among most of the footage that has been destroyed or permanently lost. Richard Donner stated at the 30th anniversary event that he regrets not holding on to all the footage and although he has exhausted many avenues, he doubts any of it is still in existence.

Alternate Versions

Sometimes, there will be several versions of a movie floating about on cable, tv or video etc. Other times, a Director may release a special cut of the movie on Blu-ray or DVD.

The following versions of The Goonies are apparently real. If you disagree or have additional info, please update us.

The TV version in the U.S. deletes almost 20 minutes, but adds several scenes. The first is the scene of Sloth and Chunk finding the hole in the wishing well scene. The second is extra dialogue between Mama Fretelli and the kids when she makes them walk the plank. Also one of the “Chunk and Sloth” scenes where they follow the Goonies was left in.

The Disney Channel version adds several deleted scenes. They include: 1. When the Goonies leave the house on their bikes, they drop by the local drug store. This is where Mikey gets a map that shows them where to find the rock formation. 2. Chunk also licks Ice Cream quarts in the freezer when Troy shows up and sets fire to One Eyed Willie's map. 3. An octopus attacks Stef, and to save her Data shoves his walkman into its mouth. It lets go of her and swims away, dancing.
