Director David Cronenberg had to reshoot the scene in which John Smith has his first premonition. It showed a little girl's room burning with a small "E.T." doll on one of the shelves. The scene had to be re-done when Universal Pictures objected.

It was David Cronenberg's idea to insert Johnny into his visions. The idea was met with a favorable response from writer Stephen King.

Stephen King originally wrote a screenplay for the Dead Zone. However, the Director David Cronenberg thought it was god awful - that King made the Castle Rock killer the main character and it was more of a slasher film.

Jeffrey Baum, the actual screen writer of the film, said "it's like King didn't understand his own book"

When Martin Sheen was approached for the role of the shady Stillson, he was a bit reluctant. For he had recently wrapped his work in "Gandhi" (1982) and felt that playing a role as Stillson wouldn't be right.
