The Abyss Filming Locations:
These scenes were actually shot at The Giant water tanks at the Cherokee Nuclear Power Plant, located in Gaffney, South Carolina. Google Map
The underwater scenes were filmed at the half completed and abandoned Duke Power Company Nuclear Power plant that had never gone online. Duke Power is estimated to have put appox. $500 million into developing this site from 1977-1983 before abandoning the project. The two tanks used had a combined capacity of over 10 million gallons. The film company ran out of money and so the sets were never broken up and may remain there to this day.
Apparently they do, as the link below will take you to an urban explorers gallery where the sets can clearly be seen. However there is no access to the public.
Often overlooked or not mentioned is The Bonne Terre Lead Mines just south of St.Louis MO. There were several scenes shot here. [Thanks to Joe B.]
