I have been checking out reviews on the 70's site, and the one written for this movie was done great.

Boy, I haven't seen it in awhile, but I remember being pretty young the first time I saw it, it must have been edited, cause I didn't remember the scene with Ned Beatty (you know the one)...until later.

But the end scene where he is dreaming and that hand pops up out of the water, I had nightmares about that scene.

I wonder who thought that up first, cause hands popping up in movie scenes happened quite a bit back then, the scene in Carrie freaked me out too.

I don't know why those guys felt guilty about killing that creepy hillbilly, and why they didn't just tell the police when they got out of there what they did. It was all self defense, and they were all a witness to it.

It is a hard movie to watch, that's for sure, but it was so well done, that is what I love about movies.

For years I'd manage to always tune in to Deliverance during the "Ned Beatty Scene". It was like being cursed or something.
On a related note, we were in a bar one night several years ago when a woman on the other side of the bar screamed. One of my cop buddies instantly yelled out "Squeal like Ned Beatty!" Luckily I had just taken a large mouthful of beer, and was able to demonstrate my "Nasal Beer Tap" trick for all in the bar. I swear, it felt like I was crying beer I was laughing so hard.

In an interview once,Burt Reynolds famously said that the guy er 'doing' Ned Beatty was a little over zealous during the filming of that scene!!!.
Apparently he wasnt a proper actor.
Freaky eh?
But not as freaky as Burt's toupee [Big Grin]

Great Banjo Music....Run...Ned...Run.

Ned Beatty once said that role has haunted him his whole life because of how embarrassing it was for him.

However, I agree Burt's toupee is even more scary. [Big Grin] Smayt last month it was Shatner's toupee, I think you must have an interest in the great toupees of our generation. [Smile]

We should also mention this was Ned Beatty's first role. People joke "maybe he didnt read the WHOLE script!" so ya gotta admire him for doing such a daring role his first time up. That scene is VERY memorable weather you like it or not. "Squeal like a pig!"

Burt actually looked GOOD in this movie!

This is one of those movies people look at me funny when I tell them I love it....but it's just so much adventure...once it starts rolling it doesnt stop. And you really do feel for the charactors and wonder what you would do in their position.

They didnt wanna tell the police/sherrif in that town cuz he would side with the hillbillys...but your right...why wouldnt they wait til they got home and tell THEIR police? Oh well. I think they had decided they never wanted to mention it again.
That would never float nowadays. If you went camping with a bunch of your friends and came back with a few missing they would assume you had killed them yourself!

Yeah, what did they tell everyone when they got back and were missing the one guy? Wasn't he married? It has been some years since I saw it, and I don't remember how they got around that.

True about the Ned Beaty scene, knowing that was acting, is the only way I can watch it, because thinking about that for real happening to someone just bothers me to no end. I would take the chance of them killing me, before I'd ever let them do that, even with my friend tied to the tree.

That scene reminds me of the movie The Last House on the Left- that had a similiar scene with 2 girls in the woods, and a bunch of freaky people, and I think it was based on a true story.

I loved this movie too. I do a lot of camping and canoeing, so this movie was right up my alley. Every time I see Ned in a movie I think of that scene.
Remember that car commercial where the guys go out in the woods and start setting up camp when they hear banjos playing "duelling banjos" so they freak out and load up their car and leave? That was funny.
The wierd part about this movie is when one of the guys accidentally shoots himself with an arrow. I never could figure out just how he did that. It seemed kind of strange to me.
Anyways... great flick!

Reading these posts almost makes me feel sorry for Ned Beatty. I guess his infamous rape scene in that movie is something he will never live down! I'm sure Ned has gotten a lot of jokes and snickers over the years because of that scene.

And, personally, I think it's a shame, because Ned is actually a very talented character actor in movies, TV, and stage. He should be remembered for some other greater roles! (Like the one he did in "Network".)

DELIVERANCE - a good movie, great acting and cinematography. I prefer the similarly themed SOUTHERN COMFORT

Watched Deliverance (1972) last night.
This is pure five star movie magic from start to finish.
The four main actors (Voight, Reynolds, Beatty, Cox) are amazing and keep in mind that both Beatty and Cox were first timers.
Boorman is a fantastic director and you also have to give credit to Vilmos Zsigmonds excellent cinematography.
The writer James D1ckey was close to the project (maybe even too close) all the time and played also the sheriff´s part in the film. He did a great job too.
Bill McKinney played the mountain man who did nasty things to Beatty. McKinney is a great actor, you can see him in many Eastwood films.

The filming this one was like war (nobody had an insurance) so it´s no surprise that the cast have remained friends and meet occasionally.
The blu-ray has loads of fantastic extras so i highly recommend it.

I remember hearing that Jon Voight actually scaled that cliff himself. That's cool.

Great movie! One of the few Reynolds movies where he has no moustache. He looks very different without it.

I always remember Ned Beatty as Dean Martin in Back to School. Such a clever name they came up with.

Yeah, they did almost everything by themselves.

Reynolds was without his signature moustache also in Sam Whiskey and Impasse, both 1969.

A year after Deliverance, Reynolds (still without moustache) and Beatty starred together again in White Lightning.

Good stuff ! [Smile]

Hmmm, I like both the guys but hard for me to pick a winner. Burt is more of a film star than Tom but at the same time Tom did play Magnum for 9 years. That's gotta be worth something.

I love Deliverance. John Boorman is one of the most underrated directors. He's in exceptionally good from here. It's an unforgettable movie.

Just kidding in my previous post

What a great movie. The old man dancing at the gas station as the boy played the banjo is hilarious.
Bill McKinney was also the football coach in Against All Odds.

Glad you were joking. I would feel terrible otherwise. I have watched Against All Odds a few ties recently and never noticed he was the coach. Well spotted. I wonder how an inbred hick got a coaching job in the NFL?
