1 song. 10 years. No chance.

There are too many variables. What 10 songs maybe.

Ha ha! "I knew there was a reason she didn't like me!"

Ok, here's an attempt at 10 that are somewhat representative even though they don't tell the whole story (soundtracks have been deliberately avoided as they are a law unto themselves):

The Nightporter - Japan
Don't Stop Believing - Journey (Once unknown in the UK, I *HATE* that this song has just become a hit due to X-Factor and Glee. I have issues)
Together in Electric Dreams - Phil Oakey and Giorgio Moroder
Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears
Victims - Culture Club
Only the Lonely - The Motels
Last Christmas - Wham!
Love Changes Everything - Climie Fisher
Stand and Deliver - Adam and the Ants
Spotlight - Madonna
Souvenir - OMD

Is that 11 already?! No! There's too many to list! That list is very pop heavy, and I kept all but one soundtrack song out. Best of 30! Top 100! MOAR!!!

hey logan i feel your pain tryin to list faav songs - it really is just ridiculously hard and thought id introduce the thread for that reason - nothing like an argument with yourself about what your favs are...you listed some great songs which are incredibly special to me too and as for having issues with x factor songs - yep - im hearing ya on that too. The amount of 80s songs that have just been murdered by others over the last 5 yrs is really criminal - and dont get me started on remakes of movies coz ill never stop. i still have to bite my lip and pull my jumper over my eyes when i hear about the karate kid. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Don't Stop Believing - Journey (Once unknown in the UK, I *HATE* that this song has just become a hit due to X-Factor and Glee. I have issues)

I heard this song for the first time during an episode of Scrubs. I think this was around 2001/2002.

The only song I remember hearing on the radio was 'Open Arms', but I had no idea until after 2001 that the band was Journey.

I think they stopped touring Europe after 1981 -- I'm sure this was why their popularity took a nose dive over here.

Logan, When did you first become aware of Journey?

OneEyedWilly,

I can remember being around my cousins in 1986/87 and hearing, 'Who Wants To Live Forever' by Queen. That moment cemented my love for Rock music.

Wait... are we doing soundtracks now?!

Before the net I bought a CD burner and compiled a CD of my favourite instrumental tracks from vinyl albums. I still have it and it's great! Of course, back then nobody I knew even cared *SOB*!

quote:
I heard this song for the first time during an episode of Scrubs. I think this was around 2001/2002.
Journey have cropped up a lot in US TV and movie scores ('Any Way You Want It' was in Caddyshack).

quote:
The only song I remember hearing on the radio was 'Open Arms', but I had no idea until after 2001 that the band was Journey.
Mariah covered it. Prior to that you *never* heard that song on the radio.

quote:

They never had any popularity here (to speak of). They did continue to play Europe, they just weren't big here at all. Same with 'Styx' - although at least they had one big hit.

quote:
Logan, When did you first become aware of Journey?
Tron soundtrack - 'Only Solutions'. Sometime in '83 / '84 (video). A few years later I bought one of those generic rock albums with a bunch of 'classic' songs lumped together because there was the song 'Don't Stop Believing' on there. Then I was hooked and started tracking down all the albums I could find. Getting Steve Perry's 'Street Talk' album before the days of the internet was painful.
Journey's greatest exposure over here was Perry's vocal line on 'We Are the World', which would always elicit a "Who the hell is that?" response at the time. Whenever I listed them as a favourite band the response was always the same; "Who? I've never heard of them." Glee and X-Factor will have changed all that. Mind you, the internet has 'merged' things together so the old ignorance would have vanished anyway.
