I was watching Dancing with the Stars tonight, and saw the preview for the new "trick" that David Blaine is doing. Some of the stuff he does is crazy. I just saw that he said he was going to catch a bullet with his teeth...now really...how is that possible without getting your head blown off...and how do you practice for something like that...and why would you do something that stupid that some other stupid person might try and copy?

The trick, according to Teller (yes, Teller--he does occasionally speak), is stunts that LOOK dangerous but really aren't--only an idiot would try something that actually is dangerous. His variation on the bullet catch he performs with Penn has, by his own account, 3 seperate safety systems, and they'd still be OK if only one worked (don't ask specifically what, though; if he told you that, it wouldn't be magic, would it?). Now some of Blaine's tricks do raise my eyebrows--freezing himself in ice, diving from 100 feet in the air into nothing but cardboard boxes, and the 24 hour dunk in the water tank that almost killed him a few years back--but I think most TV audiences are smart enough to realize he's a professional if nothing else and wouldn't try it themselves.

I wish he'd just go back to doing his street magic. That stuff was freaky but cool. But now he just does stuff for publicity.

Penn & Teller have always been pretty cool.

Before all this "Copperfield" crap he does these days, his street magic with cards and sleight of hand tricks were amazing. He should definitely go back to that. If you want to see unbelievable tricks with sleight of hand, check out Darryl and Ricky Jay. They will blow your mind:

The other day nothing was on and I was channel surfing and there was a Criss Angel special on. I was watching it....cant say I was thoroughly ENJOYING myself....but he did this thing where he totally made himself over to look like David Blaine...and then he asked a lady running a store if she knew who he was and then when she said "Yeah, you're David Blaine" he shop-lifted! I laughed my *** off!

I agree. I liked him when it was all about the llok on people's faces with the street magic he used to do, but ever since he's focused on the (publicity) stunts, I'm just no longer into him.
