We had a top 5 shredders thread, so how about a thread dedicated to the skin pounders who put there life, soul, blood and sweat into keeping the beat.

Who are your favourites (notice I state favourites and not best as undoubtedly some of my favourites may not be deemed as technically good drummers)?

1. Dave Lombardo (by a drum-rolling mile!!!!!)

2. Dave McClain (Machine Head)

3. Steve Riley (ex WASP, LA Guns, Steppenwolf)

4. Patrick Grun (Caliban. master of the double bass drums)

5. Scott Rockenfield (Queensryche)

Honourable mentions:

Paul Bostaph (Ex Slayer, Testament)
Nick Menza (Ex Megadeth)
Tommy Lee (Motley Crue)
Lars Ulrich (not great but the heart and soul of Metallica)
Joey Jordison (Slipknot)
Clive Burr (ex Iron Maiden. Much preferred to Nicko)

Noms [Cool]

Definitely Tommy Lee. He freakin' rocks. I also gotta give it up to Rick Allen for all that he went through. I also enjoyed Tommy Aldridge back in the day.

Doesn't Paul play drums? I'd love to hear his picks.

AHHHH! How could I forget Rick Allen??? Shame on me!

soooo......

Tommy Lee
Lars Ulrich
Sheila E
Rick Allen
Dave Lombardo (I'm not a big SLAYER fan but I gots to give credit where credit is due).

Tommy Lee ranks so high because I've actually seen him play live and it was MAGIC, I tells ya! It was LIFE-ALTERING! Hahaha. I've seeb Sheila E and Rick Allen play live too. Sometimes I take 'em for granted unless I've seen them play live.

You know who doesnt get enough credit? Alex Van Halen. In The Dave Years VAN HALEN was like a well-oiled machine, the perfect band, everybody was tight. I could listen to their music every day and never get tired of it.

Not really got many favorite drummers - I tend to pick up on individual tracks, and just about all drummers have great tracks and poor tracks, depending on the style and the tempo. In many cases, it's understanding what NOT to play, aas much as knowing what skin or cymbal to hit. Many a potentially good song have been ruined by overly obtrusive drumming, in much the same way that you can always tell when the lead guitarist writes the songs ('cos there's a big old lead break in every sony, whether it makes any sense to be there or not!)

Some that stand out for me (not all 80s) are Matt Cameron from Pearl Jam, Richie Morales, and Dominic Howard, who plays with Muse.

However - one stands out for me as being both technically brilliant, and able to interpret the right way to play any song so that the drums enhance the music and don't just underpin it. And that drummer is..... me! No seriously, it has to be Stewart Copeland. He's head, shoulders, torso and a fair bit of his hips above any other professional drummer I can recall.
