Arnold Schwarzenegger still owed De Laurentiis a movie, based on an earlier multi-picture agreement that he'd made back in the Conan days. But after reading the two scripts, the star said he wasn't interested in doing Raw Deal, he wanted to do Total Recall. De Laurentiis considered the offer, but didn't think Schwarzenegger was right for the role. Perhaps he didn't think the star could pack the box office clout. For whatever reason, he said no. Well, the usual back-and-forth negotiating ensued and, in the end, Arnold decided to do the mob movie -- but only in exchange for dissolving their contractual arrangement. It was a good decision. Schwarzenegger liked making Raw Deal. He especially enjoyed working with John Irvin, who was considered a real actor's director. Years later, based on his growing fame, Schwarzenegger was able to make another deal -- he convinced Carolco Pictures to buy some film rights for him. The film? Total Recall.
