Rumors persisted for many years that Atari had produced the game for commercial release. At the end of the movie there is a title that says "Video game available from Atari Inc." See the site listed in our links section for the definitive FAQ that answers this and many more questions.

I am not sure about the Atari 2600, but the game was completed for the Atari home computer system, remember the old Atari 400 or 800 then later the 800XL and XEGS game system (Atari's answer to the Sega and Nintendo game systems). How do I know this, I played it. The rumor was the game was smuggled out of Atari because of changes which were being made to it. I heard it was eventually released as Star Raiders II after the changes were made. The game actually started with the scrolling letters "Greeting Starfighter, you have been recruited by the star league to defend the frontier from Xur and the Kodan armada. It was fun to play, after your power level went down you would jump to a nearby sun to recharge via solar panels. I loved playing the game and eventually the disk was corrupted. This was pre-hard drive years. Those old 5 1/4 inch disks were terrible for that. Unfortunately, I no longer have a copy, nor do I have any Atari computers anymore.

This was the final big-screen appearance for New York Stage actor Robert Preston, who passed away in 1987. Curiously, his character of intergalactic war recruiter Centauri, was a near-perfect spoof of his most famous Broadway role, Professor Harold Hill, the title character from "The Music Man".

Marvel comics released a tie-in comic book adaptation of the film.

"The Last Starfighter" was the first full length science fiction feature film to film a scene using Computer Generated Graphics (CGI).

Unlike back drops and space ship models used in earlier movies, the outer space scenes were created using computer programs and electronic pixels. Shots that included the actors (such as inside the space ships) used a sound stage, but the exterior battle settings were CGI.
