Jessica Tandy became the oldest person to win an Oscar for Best Actress, for this film.
Dan Aykroyd became the second former 'Saturday Night Live' cast member to be nominated for an Oscar (for his supporting role as Daisy's son Boolie). The first was Joan Cusack (for Working Girl).
Tandy's next feature film, "Fried Green Tomatoes", also grossed over $100 million, making her a bigger box office draw than most actors one third her age. She also earned a Supporting Actor nomination.
The cast included two famous TV moms, Esther Rolle of "Good Times" as Daisy's wise maid Idella, and Patti LuPone of "Life Goes On" as flirty Florine, whom Boolie ends up marrying.
