Rob Lowe supposedly took his inspiration for the character from a guy he knew from High School: "Pot-leg" Scott White, who was very into High School football, made all-American at Princeton, then went on to be a rookie with the Buffalo Bills. He mentioned that he remembered that his friend Scott liked Mountain Holler soda, ate cobbler all the time and had a Russian girlfriend named Svetlana. He thought "what an interesting character, I will try to duplicate some of this in the movie."

The movie is based loosely on the ice hockey experiences of director Peter Markle. When Markle filmed the ice hockey scenes, he worked while on ice skates.

During the filming of "Youngblood" Rob Lowe would practice the sax between takes to prepare for his role in "St. Elmos Fire". He didn't know how to play the sax and tried to get as much practice in as he could. In fact, "Youngblood" was filmed right before "St Elmos Fire" but was released a year later.
