Jack Nicholson was originally offered the Bruno Lawrence role but wanted way too much money.

The movie is based on the novel "The Quiet Earth" by Craig Harrison.

Enroute to location the truck and trailer of genuine explosives cartons (empty) pulled into a petrol station to refuel, causing considerable alarm.

Similarly, some of the cartons got blown onto an Auckland motorway from the storage location where the scale model of the facility was to be used for some of the final scenes.
