Under their watchful eye, the following special places were used for filming "Tron":
These scenes were actually shot at The Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, located in Livermore, N. California. Google Map
Apart from the early scenes set in the real world Tron was filmed entirely on a soundstage and was a mix of live action and animated production.
Tom Davis has done a great bit of research on the Encom headquarters (skyscraper). It was previously believed that this was filmed at the Trans-America Building in downtown San Francisco. However Tom righly guessed and then confirmed that the skyscraper scenes in Tron are from the Trans America building in metro Los Angeles. He found confirmation in the book "Machine Project: A Field Guide to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art". Here is a quote from the book: "The Transamerica building was used for the external shots of the Encom building in the 1982 Disney film Tron, and in particular for the final scene in which the entire city is depicted as turning into the world of the programs, a city of woven light comprised entirely of networks and data."
Flynn's is in Culver City near the fire station and is a restaurant. It is off of Washington Blvd. [Thanks to Cynthia] The address of Flynn's arcade is at 9543 Culver Blvd in Culver City, CA. 90232. It is currently occupied by the Ashaka restaurant. [Thanka to Brian Wisdom]
I am told that the laser lab, in which an orange, & later Flynn, were both "digitized", was actually the interior of the Shiva laser, at the time the largest laser in the world (it was the one which was used to measure the temperature of the sun's interior). Unfortunately I don't know its location, or if another, more powerful, laser has since been built. [Thanks to David]
Lawrence Livermore lab in Livermore, CA was the site for the interior lab scenes (laser, 'big door', etc.) [Thanks to Terry Smith]
Can you help? Do you know any of the N. California (or any other) filming locations used for Tron, particularly Flynn's bar? Please Update Us
Locations LinksIf you know of a good link for Tron locations, please let us know.
LX is our radical new locations feature that we've been beavering away on.. For years!
Each location will have it's own page with then/now pictures, maps, StreetView, discovery story and the most detailed explanations on how the location was used. Most importantly, the locations will have a status that shows whether they are verified correct and by whom. We are working with the actual locations managers or other crew where possible. The whole thing will be very interactive and you will, of course, be able to update everything.
