Filmed on location in Wilmington, NC
Opposing views as to whether or not the truck stop used in the movie was an operating one; one story says it was a real truck stop, while another states that it was a set, but so realistic that many truckers tried to stop there.
But, thanks to P.Fowler who wrote in to give us the facts: Maximum Overdrive was one of the first films shot in Wilmington NC and surrounding areas. Most scenes were filmed on Hwy 74/76 in Leland. I lived in the area and was 12 or 13 at the time. This location was a common road used for going to school and into Wilmington so I was able to see the set develop from week to week. The truck stop was not a real working business. And yes it was authentic looking. It was torn down after filming was completed, though I believe the truck stop diner remained because there is still a building there in the exact location. Can you help?
