Devolution here,

Over the past couple of months, I have been listening to the Pixies, But to the point that I have been listening to them all the time. Looking at their short life span, and their time in the fold, 86-91 in the public view, I wonder how on earth I missed them? I know that they were the first real "College Rock" band but their music makes you want to listen to more of their music.

Doolittle has to be on my top 10 albums of all time, and I didn't listen to it when it came out. How is that possible? Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Where is my mind?, Here comes your man, Tame... They had it right, the songs are short and don't give you time to want to change the song, and the music is powerful.

Finally, Knowing that the Pixies inspired Nirvana and Weezer and other bands makes me appreciate them as a force that made other great music, and I think that is their greatest legacy.

Check them out if you haven't.

Devo.. I love the Pixies tune "Wave of Mutilation" and "Where's My Mind" is quite good, but after that I'm just not on board as solid.

Wait.. "Monkey Gone To Heaven".. that's another Pixies tune I enjoy.

Maybe I'm a bigger fan than I realize.. and just need to listen to more tunes.

I know what you mean about the short length of tunes.. Wave of Mutilation only last about 2 minutes. I always play it at least twice when it comes on my ipod.

I associate The Pixies with college.

Sometimes we don't hear the music until later, sometimes we don't appreciate it until later, and sometimes the bands that were around at the same time were just as great meaning we have too much to choose from and have to go back. I didn't enjoy Van Halen (apart from a couple of songs) until after 2000 - same with Fleetwood Mac. I heard them, but they just didn't click.

It's nice when you re-discover bands you didn't enjoy enough at the time.

they are one of my favorite bands ever. they are the poster children for 80's alternative college rock (i guess along with the replacements).

and they sound great live. just an all around great band. i was lucky enough to know some people who were into them from their beginning so i jumped on that bandwagon early.

pick up surfer rosa or doolittle. or even the greatest hits comp "wave of mutilation". you'll never regret it.
