Dangerous Liasions was adapted from a play by Christopher Hampton called Les Liasions Dangereuses, which in turn is adapted from a series of letters by Pierre Ambroise François Choderlos de Laclos, with the same name. The original letters from Laclos form the basis of the story in all of the adaptations, including "Valmont".

This movie is based on the play by Christopher Hampton (who wrote the screenplay). Allan Rickman originated the part of Valmont on stage (Rickman is known for the Harry Potter movies). The movie "Valmont" by Milso Foreman was made after Dangerous Liaisons. Foreman wanted to direct the Glenn Close movie but lost out... So he decided to create his own version of it.
