These scenes were actually shot at First Avenue, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Google Map
The club is still in existence today and many popular bands play there. It's an old Greyhound Bus Depot that was converted to a concert club (originally called The Depot) in 1970. [Thanks to John]
The Kid's house is to be found at 3420 Snelling Avenue in Longfellow, Minneapolis [Thanks to Robert Hardin]
The movie was also filmed at other locations in Minneapolis and Eagan, Minnesota as well as allegedly some work in Los Angeles when the weather in Minneapolis turned bad. [Thanks to Sean Harrington]
The interiors were filmed in LA on sets.
The hotel where Appolonia resided in the movie was actually filmed at the Huntington Hotel on Main Street in Downtown, Los Angeles. The hotel still exists. [Thanks to Jennifer]
A visitor wrote in to say that the city of Henderson MN has a map on their web site showing the shooting locations for Purple Rain for the country bike ride and "Lake" scene. (actually on the Minnesota River). Some local stories are also told about the filming.
