Maximum Overdrive Filming Locations:

Filmed on location in Wilmington, NC

Opposing views as to whether or not the truck stop used in the movie was an operating one; one story says it was a real truck stop, while another states that it was a set, but so realistic that many truckers tried to stop there.

But, thanks to P.Fowler and Steve who wrote in to give us the facts: Maximum Overdrive was one of the first films shot in Wilmington NC and surrounding areas. Most scenes were filmed on Hwy 74/76 in Leland. I lived in the area and was 12 or 13 at the time. This location was a common road used for going to school and into Wilmington so I was able to see the set develop from week to week. The truck stop was not a real working business. And yes it was authentic looking. It was torn down after filming was completed, though I believe the truck stop diner remained because there is still a building there in the exact location.

The truck stop is located at the intersection of Andrew Jackson Highway and Enterprise Drive NE in Leland, NC [Thanks to Steve]

The bridge in the beginning of the movie is the Isabella Holmes Bridge in downtown Wilmington, NC. [Thanks to Steve]

The gas station where the newlyweds attempt to get gas is located at the intersection of Fletcher Road and Lanvale Road in Leland. [Thanks to Steve]

In the scene with the kid on the bike and the ice cream truck, you can see the intersection of Kenwood Ave. and Shirley Rd. These are the actual names of the street and are located in Wilmington close to the film studios. [Thanks to Steve]

LX Preview

LX is our radical new locations feature that we've been beavering away on.. For years!

Each location will have it's own page with then/now pictures, maps, StreetView, discovery story and the most detailed explanations on how the location was used. Most importantly, the locations will have a status that shows whether they are verified correct and by whom. We are working with the actual locations managers or other crew where possible. The whole thing will be very interactive and you will, of course, be able to update everything.
