I liked the movie too with the exception of the inevitable Spielberg cheesy happy ending. The first half hour of the movie is probably the most intense scene in cinematic history.

I love that film. I saw it twice in the theater when it was released back in 1998. Subsequently I've watched in many times on TV and DVD. Some of the scenes are so intense, they make me squirm just thinking about them. For instance, the scene where the German soldier slowly plunges the dagger into Mellish's chest.

I never thought that the ending was cheesy or happy. In fact, I always thought that it was quite sad, with the entire troop of soldiers getting killed, with the exceptions of Upham and Reiben. Also, it's quite sad how Ryan collapses onto Captain Miller's grave, still overcome with doubt as well as the guilt of being indirectly responsible for the death of so many soldiers.

Great movie from start to finish! [Smile]

you need to see it with your surround sound on and you speakers placed around the room. When they land on the beach the bullets come whizzing by you all around the room. Parts of gunfire seem to go right across your body from the sound of it... Awesome.

Good points there, I still think the flag shot was OTT. Also, the accepted history of WW2 is all wrong, so they've never made a true war that explains what was actually going on & how. This was still a good movie overall, and I watch it every now & then: the stabbing scene you mentioned were excellently directed and acted, D-Day was intense too.

The best war film, (not really a pure war film as it was a film about a war) was 'The Battle Of Algiers': its realistic and simply tells the story as it was, without exaggerating or over emphasising a point.
