These 2 bands made a great inpact on the 90s,infact the the whole grunge sceen defined a generation.I personally think this was the biggest thing to happen to music since the British Invasion.Sorry nothing this big Musically has been since so who are your picks of this style of music???

Pearl Jam over Nirvana for hipstermom...Nirvana over Pearl Jam for my hipster daughter.
I have been lucky enough to see PJ twice.
OTOH I would probably pick Soundgarden if there was a third choice.

I like them both for different reasons but if I had to choose I'd go with Nirvana.
My second choice would be Alice In Chains, third would be Pearl Jam, Soundgarden would be number four.

SAM,i love Alice In ChainsLeaders in the Seattle grunge burst of the early 90's with such acts as Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Gruntruck. Having one of the best debut efforts of all time, the band mastered a gloom/doom metal sound that would change as they became mainstream. Each studio album was followed by an acoustic based EP, showcasing the range of the band with great harmonies and moody effects.GREAT BAND!!!!

I favor Nirvana over PJ, but I think Soundgraden and Alice in Chains were both overlooked for a long time. I still think to this day that both AIC and Soundgarden were underrated. Soundgarden came along wayyyyyyyyy b4 PJ or Nirvana anyways...

I have gotta say that I favor Pearl Jam over Nirvana because they had more songs. Honestly the only song of Nivana's that I know of is Smells like Teen Spirit. Liked that first Pearl Jam Album a lot, still have it somewhere the cd was pink I think with cool lettering.

I would pick Nirvana just on the basis that I can listen to them without throwing up. Pearl Jam is bad Staten Island bar music sung by people on Karaoke that think they sound like Eddie Vedder just because they have seen Singles.

i am not a fan of nirvana, i think i liked a few songs only. however, i like alice in chains and soundgarden. pearl jam is good too.

Down here in Texas, around my area, Pearl Jam was always the bigger of the two. I always chose PJ over Nirvana and still do. The only tune of Nirvanas I like is Lake of Fire, and even that is a Meat Puppets song....I think. So Pearl Jam is first on my grunge list.
Based on musicianship, Pearl Jam all the way. And now PJ has Matt Cameron, which is one awesome drummer. and you can't beat Mike McCready on guitar. He is like SRV and Jimmy Page combined. Dave Grohl seems to be the only one in Nirvana with any playing talent.
Then, as Ronnie stated, we got AIC. They are a tie with Stone Temple Pilots for second on my list. My third choice is the long forgotten Candlebox. Yes,..I consider STP and Candlebox grunge. Candlebox's first cd is awesome all the way through. It still remains one of my favs.

Thank you Ronnie.....I thought for sure by mentioning Candlebox that I would be blasted out of here. A lot of people I have talked to do not give the respect to Candlebox that I thought they deserved.

There was an English Nirvana way before the one from Seattle.
Nirvana eat Pearl Jam for breakfast!A,I.C and Soundgarden of course!
Another few fave bands of mine from Seaattle are-
The Melvins Metal Church Sanctuary(Now Nevermore) Gruntruck Queensryche Temple of the Dog And the band who had one album and the singer tragically died of an overdose.

Both bands had a tremendous influence on me. I have been lucky enough to see Pearl Jam twice. I have to say that the Vitalogy tour was the best. They played a heck of a lot of Ten & Vs stuff. Plus, they played Yellowledbetter and a few other really early ones. I think they are one of the most talented bands in history.
Musically, Nirvana weren't genius. Most of their songs have a maximum of four chords. However, we all know that simple is sometimes the key. As a listener, I love that Nirvana burst onto the music scene with the killer track "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (still one of my favourite songs)but as a guitarist, I find some of their songs fairly one dimensional. I just don't feel that way about Pearl Jam. Having said that, the only reason I never saw Nirvana was because they never came to Australia...and Pearl Jam only came twice
I also love Alice In Chains and Soundgarden. My favourite Alice In Chains song is "Would". It is amazing! Anyway, sorry to ramble but, although I love the 80's, I was also a generation Xer through & through. PJ & Nirvana shaped my adolescence...for better or for worse Posted by kat27 (Member # 3979) on :

I'd rather eat vegetables than listen to either of them. My alternative 90s music is dance music...I'd rather listen to some techno or "white label" remixes instead.
Also, if you grew up in the 80s, but you like Nirvana or Pearl Jam, please take your 80s Fan Club membership card and set fire to it, for you have ipso facto declared your hatred for the decade.
Yeah, yeah, I know they both started out in the 80s, but the sound is pure 90s.
