by the way Nick, what are some of your favorite 90's movies? The 90's was definitely the decade for major blockbuster films like "Titanic(which, I suppose, was mostly a chick flick) and high-energy films for guys (like "Terminator 2","True Lies", etc, etc). However, I love both the chick flicks and the guy movies. Overall, the 90's was a decade with well polished, perfect films. =-)
 

Errr... Well, I did love some of the more outstanding big event pictures of the 90's like "T2", "True Lies" and "Titanic" (All Cameron movies!! --in fact all his movies are always at least very good if not brilliant)

I also truly loved some of the more "soft hearted" movies of the decade. Ones that spring to mind are "Beauty & The Beast", "Mr Holland's Opus" and "Pretty Woman".

And, of course, who could forget probably the most popular overall movie of the decade: "The Shawshank Redemption" !!

Other movies I really enjoyed would have to include the one's I listed as "honorary 80's Movies" including "There's Something About Mary", "She's All That" (A direct rip-off of "Can't Buy Me Love") and "Never Been Kissed".

Just looking back on the list it would seem I have a great soft spot for what most others call "Chick Flix"... So I'll add that I *loved* "Apollo 13" too :))))))
 

and ya, I have to say I have a soft spot for "chick flicks" too,hehe. Like I'm really anxious to see "Sweet Home Alabama" with Reese Witherspoon. It seems like a movie I would really like because I can something like it's plot happening to me! However, I'm always really looking forward to "Igby Goes Down". It's supposed to be one of those controversial, angst-ridden, coming-of age flicks, kinda like "The Basketball Diaries" and I LOVE movies like that. Plus, I think Kieran Culkin is really cute, :-)

Though I enjoy these movies, my heart is forever with the films of the 80s. One of the few highlights in my nightmarish trip through Clinton's America was my discovery of all things 80s. I've become a raging 80s fan ever since...the movies you see listed are the only 8 movies of which I profess any fandom. Everything else just made me yearn for the days of Molly Ringwald...

But if we're all to be honest with ourselves, we've all suffered some hard times AND some good times in each decade that we've lived in, it's just that the 80's was a more magical time to me because I didn't really have any worries, my grandpa was still alive (I was closer to my grandpa than anyone else, even to this day), I was a kid, etc etc. However, the 90's was all about highschool and boys, which of course brought along it's share of pros and cons, but to be honest, each decade has its share of both good and bad times. :)
 

Good for me in the 90s:

-My discovery of 80s culture
-My years in Elementary School (1990-1992)

Bad for me in the 90s:

-My dad died in 1995.
-I was hospitalized in 1996 after snapping like a twig and saying outrageous things in my 8th Grade year.
-I transferred schools 3 times.
-I was beaten by a school bully while a teacher stood by and did nothing except send ME to the Principal's Office where I earned my (at the time) 9th In-School Suspension while the scumbucket who beat me got off with a slap on the wrist.
-I was trampled by the 5th Grade...not a specific class, but the entire 5th Grade. When I was crying and hurt, the teacher told me "Stand up and get to class".
-I was made fun of by everybody, including students, teachers, friends and even my own family.
-I was diagnosed with depression.
-I went through a period where I felt unduly attacked by everybody simply because I was making mistakes.

8 bad against 2 good...now you know why I wish the 90s never happenned.

Highschool was tough for me at times too, of course I'm sure I didn't have anywhere near as bad a time as you though. A lot of girls hated me because I always went out with all the guys that they wanted to date, however I never stole any girls boyfriend. Girls can be very malicious, and in highschool a lot of them hated me simply because a lot of guys liked me. They called me names like slut and everything else mean and untrue that you can imagine, and one girl even wrote up a hitlist with people she wanted to kill and I was number three on the list. Again, it was simply because she was jealous of me that she wanted to kill me. Luckily, a teacher found out and the police escorted her away from the school and she never came back. I've always been closer to guys than girls too, I don't know why, I've just always gotten along better with them. When I read up on Madonna's younger years, it reminds me alot of my life in the past.

But anyways, are you from England by any chance? I'm an American, but I was reading in a magazine an article about Kelly Osbourne, and she was saying how all the teachers in England are really mean and treat you like s**t. I wasn't really sure if that was true though since I've never been out of the states.
 

Sorry to hear that you had such a bad time during your younger years.

Having grown up in the late 60's and throughout the 70's (and I'm 43 now), I will say that it wasn't easy to grow back then either. So, you're not alone.

But I will say that peer pressure and school violence has greatly increased over time, so it isn't suprising the last 12 years have such horrifying school violence incidents, namely the Columbine High School in 1999.

If this keeps up, at this rate, what's going to happen to teenagers in 2000 and beyond. It makes you shudder, doesn't it? It would make "Hannibal" seem like a comedy!

If you remember seeing the violent high school in "Class of 1984", perhaps now that movie seems ahead of its time.

However, it seems unfair to malign an entire decade just because of your experiences in your formative years.

On another note, regarding your "Favorite 90's Movies" list, it is interesting that the film you mentioned all came out in the early 90's.

But who knows, there are people who were teenagers during the 80's and grew up on John Hughes movies, and are now becoming filmmakers themselves. So maybe you'll see renaissance of 80's-type movies again.

Just remember Neil Young once said about 80's New Wave: "Every wave is new...until it breaks."
 

I never really liked 90s music. I thought the TV shows weren't that good. I thought the fashions to be generic. I hated the commercials on TV.

I'm not a 90s fan...I feel you had it better in the 80s.

I guess that I'm saying that my dislike of 90s culture combined with my experiences in the alterna-decade is what's formed who I am...a 19-year-old 80s fanatic.

Am I a little better understood?

The decade all-around was bad for me on both the personal and cultural fronts.
 

Since most of you have mentioned some of my most favorite 90's flicks (Matrix
Shawshank, True Romance, Something about Mary, Sixth Sense, Pulp Fiction, Schindlers List), I would have to say that a few from this decade really pop out at me including Amelie and Monsoon Wedding. If you haven't seen these two, I would urge you to do so ASAP!

This was way action-packed, and hilarious to boot. To think that one day commercial jingles will be considered oldies...that's too funny.

Sorry, but "Top Gun" is definitely an 80's movie, not the 90's.

But it makes me wonder: considering that movie was so extremely popular at the box office, why has there been no sequel? I would expected there would've been one made by now!

"All Dogs Go To Heaven" was released in 1989, but the sequel and TV series both came out in 1996.
