Last month, my local PBS station ran their usual pledge breaks, but they have also been showing (and selling) a DVD documentary on the musical group, The Carpenters, in between the breaks.

I saw portions of it, and I must say it was a moving experience. The documentary covers Karen & Richard Carpenter's rise to pop stardom, and then their hits and TV specials during the 70's, and later Richard's drug problems, and eventually Karen's own health problems and her subsequent death in 1983 due to anorexia nervosa (a condition that wasn't well-known at the time).

There were also interviews with Richard, and other songwriters (most notably Paul Williams), the group's band members, and other vocalists (such as Peggy Lee).

I am not a fan of their music; it's too mellow for me. But I have to say I was impressed by the documentary.
