I don't know what this movie was suppose to be about. There was no plot anywhere. I guess it's just suppose to be about dancing and the music is awesome.

I only saw it once in the theaters, so I'm trying really hard to refresh my memory...

Tony Manero (John Travolta) lives with his working-class family in Brooklyn, NY. He has a job in a hardware store, but lives for partying and dancing with a bunch of friends every Saturday night. He and his friends seem to have no ambition or plans on what they want to do as they grow up.

He later develops a relationship with another dancer named Stephanie (played by Karen Lynn Gorney) who does have some sort of ambition and concerns on her life goals.

Later on in the movie, Tony realizes his life (which consist of mostly nightclubbing, dancing, and working in a dead-end job as a paint salesman) is going nowhere. He even consults his brother, who is a Catholic priest. This is especially affirmed when one of his friends commits suicide by falling over the Brooklyn Bridge.

It's amazing what you can remember if you take out the music and dancing sequences!

The movie critic Gene Siskel once said this movie was one of his favorite all-time films. He also claimed to have bought Travolta's white suit used in the movie through an auction.

The sequel "Staying Alive" came out as a follow-up to what happened to the Tony Manero character.

Oh well thank you for that...I kinda got that from watching it but I thought maybe there was a more nondirect meaning behind the film. I guess now I understand it more and maybe I will even rent the follow up, if i can find it anywhere! Thanks StevenHW!

i like that movie it has some great songs in it and John Travolta's a great actor me and my aunt saw him in new york city once. he signed her picture of him and hes a very sweet, nice, polite person.

Its just a movie that shows what 70's discos were like. Its neat to watch.

I enjoy the music.

Am I the only one who actually though staying alive was better than saturday night fever?
Also I thought that Tony maneros character was really unlikable.

Yes, you are.

I was never convinced that the Tony Manero character could ever make it as a Broadway dancer. And unlike SNF, I can't remember a single song from the sequel. And which studio dimwit came up with the idea of Sylvester Stallone getting involved in this?

Also, Travolta's own career during this time was beginning to slump. And the sequel didn't do much to improve things for him. The comedy "Look Who's Talking[i]" helped revive his career a bit, but he spent most of the 80's in too many silly comedies and TV-movies.

It was not until the 1994 movie "[i]Pulp Fiction", that brought Travolta in a huge comeback, in a role totally unlike anything else he did before.
