This is the official Rewind 80's movie fashion thread

   -  click to play as you read this thread

Despite Muffy's awesome Guilty Pleasure topic.. we need to face facts.. The Rewind is on an extended Spring Break at the moment.  So let's all do our best to put a spark back into our 80's mojo with a little fashion discussion.  I know most of us are still incorporating the 80's into our lives whenever possible despite our lack of postings.. but I think it is time we get creative and have some more fun!

So I want everyone to take a few moments to think about your 80's fashion or if you never had an 80's fashion past.. describe what you envision it would have been like if you were in high school or college in the 80's.

Need more help?   Please take a moment and close your eyes and think about which 80's movie character or characters best represents your fashion style.

Think .. shirt, pants, dress, blouse, jacket, shoes, earrings, necklace, bracelet, and any other accessories.

Then in the spirit of Muffington's Guilty Pleasures thread.. attempt to answer these questions:

1.  Which character(s) best represent your 80's fashion style?

2.  Some reasons and examples why?  Please try to explain it and even better .. post a few pics that will visually help us!

3.  Finally, are 80's styles still a major factor in your fashion choices today and do you currently have anything in your closet that is a fav you've clung on to from the past?

Let's have some fun.  If you need any help with posting pics etc.  I'd be glad to help!

Everyone knows that "Valley Girl" is my fav movie and the incredible 80's fashion on display in the pic above is a perfect example of why it should totally represent my 80's style.  But to be honest.. only Brad's flashy jacket would make my 80's wardrobe.

 -

Wait.. the leather jacket from above is quite similar to a jacket I once owned .. and I can totally envision my girlfriend in a cool leather jacket as well.  Normally, I'm not into matching looks, but those VG leather jackets are the exception!

I was always on the cutting edge of fashion as a teenager because one of my good friends, Dawn, worked at a trendy clothing store.  So I'd go visit her late at night and we would kill time by picking out crazy stuff for each other to try on and model around the store helping other customers.  I ended up purchasing quite a few looks from that place and actually had many customers ask me to help pick out a cool style for them based on my current wacky look.

But with all that fun we had, my style was more of the 80's Quiksilver with jeans or shorts look. Definitely some neon added in for going out to dance clubs, but overall nothing too overly flashy.  Well, except for maybe Brad's jacket.

So let me answer my questions:

1.  Which character(s) best represents your 80's fashion style?

 -

Rick Morehouse (after the Terry Griffith makeover)

2.  How about a few reasons and examples why?  Please try to explain it and even better .. post a few pics that will visually help us!

 -

That blue/aqua striped shirt Rick Morehouse is sporting in the first pic definitely would have caught my eye back then.

And you could also find me with the look above including that jacket fer sure. However, I lost most of my jackets because it was trendy at my high school to let girls that had a crush on you 'borrow' your jacket for a day or two.  The problem was I think those girls had a bigger crush on  my jackets than me..  because they sure never seemed to return them. ha

3.  Finally, are 80's styles still a major factor in your fashion choices today and do you currently have anything in your closet that is a fav you've clung on to from the past?

 -

What brought this idea to me was a conversation I had with my best friend a few weeks ago.  We got to discussing 80's fashion and then I remembered that I had kept a couple of shirts from my teenage years.  I don't ever wear them anymore, but they are a part of my past that I just can't seem to let go.

 -

Always enjoyed the detail on the collar of the first shirt, but though faded now.. the second shirt was totally my style as well.

So who's next?

heh..i won't have much to offer this thread. I wasn't in highschool in the 80's, so fashion wasn't ever a big deal to me. So therefore, I didn't put much thought into what I'd wear. I guess it's safe to say I was a basic t-shirt n jeans guy.

1.  Which character(s) best represent your 80's fashion style?

well, a couple characters come to mind....

John Bender (Breakfast Club)
 -

and

Stiles (Teen Wolf)
 -

the way I dressed was pretty much a cross between those 2 characters.

2.  Some reasons and examples why?

I dunno...i was just lazy I guess..if it didn't smell to bad I'd wear it. I didn't care if it matched either.

3.  Finally, are 80's styles still a major factor in your fashion choices today and do you currently have anything in your closet that is a fav you've clung on to from the past?

well, great thing about being t-shirt & jeans guy..it never really was a fashion. So in that sense it never really goes in or out of style. I like it like that. Makes for some easy choices in what to wear. And no, I don't really own anything that I've held onto for years besides the few band t-shirts n junk I've bought at past shows.

so anyway, there ya go...told ya I wouldn't have much to give to this thread:p

Pyro.. those are both great choices and actually 'not caring' was an 80's style as proven by Bender.

That is the spirit of the thread.. which 80's characters style or lack of style in Pyro's examples best define you.

I SO wanted to be Kelly Bundy:

 -

but I was way too modest. I did wear spandex pants, jumpsuits, hoop earrings, bangle bracelets and loved boots: moccasin, suede, stiletto etc. NEVER lo-cut tops though.

1. Which character(s) best represent your 80's fashion style?

Baby from "Dirty Dancing."

 -

2. Examples...

Like Pyro, I was a little too young to really explore fashion in the 80's, but I still remember LOVING Jennifer's Grey's style in "Dirty Dancing" sooo much. I remember my Mom buying me the white keds shoes like hers and the little rolled up denim shorts too. I think I requested to have my hair permed like hers too but I was just too young for that! [Smile]
 -

3. Finally, are 80's styles still a major factor in your fashion choices today and do you currently have anything in your closet that is a fav you've clung on to from the past?

I have a pair of sunglasses that look very 80's to me (the ray ban wayfarer style). Other than that, I have always loved leopard print stuff and I kinda associate that with the 80's.

Too cool Bamersy and Veronica!

I'm pretty sure that the majority of the folks here were too young to be full on 80's. But with all the movies we watch most of us adopted an idea of what we would have been like back then.

Really enjoying the choices to this point.. very cool and awesome pics! [Cool]

I wonder how many highschool girls did actually go to school looking like kelly bundy? Heck, I can recall a a girl or 2 that beared a close resemblance at my highschool. Of course I wasn't popular enough to hang out with them though..lol

And I understand the point you're making Valley. And you're right. After all, the 'Lack" of style was a pretty "in" thing in the mid 90's when I went to highschool because of the whole grunge thing. So I pretty much fit in like a glove with my John Bender style. [Cool]

I guess Jerry Mitchell would be close what i looked back then.
Pullover/sweatshirt and jeans, yeah i was one of the "regular" guys.

Usually i let my mom do my haircuts (She did pretty well) but one day i went to hairdresser
and they did this "rock" look.
I looked pretty much like Paul in The Lost Boys.

 -

But it was just one day, i guess that wasn´t my thing.
(or i was lazy to do it again)

I still like the Jerry Mitchell look but at work i wear mostly blouses and jeans.

We also had some Kelly Bundys back then.
In fact one of the girls looked just like her, she had a shorter hair though.

Devolution here,

I think I kind of dressed more like Bud Bundy. Not really involved in trends, but probably more athletic. I think it has more to do with the amount of Celtic T-shirts that I had.

I have to do some research.

We are DEVO

Awesome Topic Valley!! I had to think about it a little.........

so
1.Who best represents my 80s style?
Lanie Dream a little Dream
 -

2. why?
I admired her so much as a little girl and I still love b&w stripes! I'd loved her leotards and dresses!

3. I do still love me some stripes.....I have maybe 3 shirts with b&w stripes ha! My style for awhile now has been a cute feminine shirt, black cardigan and cute shoes. I have some green flats that look so 80s and pink jellies!

So I was just a kid in the 80s....my mom was a single mom. We didn't get to spend much on clothes.....but in jr.high my mom bought my sister and I suede jackets...hers purple mine green......I still have it from N.E.T. Works....I loved that sucker.....check out how 90s the tag is? lol

1. Which character(s) best represent your 80's fashion style?

My excellent attire wasn't a million miles from Bill & Ted. Even today, I make an effort to dress like this for job interviews...

 -

I also wore this kind of Denim jacket from time to time, I think most people had one.

 -

2. Some reasons and examples why? Please try to explain it and even better .. post a few pics that will visually help us!

 -

See Ted's orange jacket? I had one like that but in electric blue. Casual was the look.

3. Finally, are 80's styles still a major factor in your fashion choices today and do you currently have anything in your closet that is a fav you've clung on to from the past?

Very rarely, on a very hot Summers day and against my better judgement, I bring out the Don Johnson 'Miami Vice' suit (shimmering pastel green, no less) with an apricot T-shirt and Ray Bans! [Cool] [Wink]

 -

I actually have a lot of stuff from the past. One of my favourites is a vintage Spiderman T-shirt with my name on it. And a rare, glow-in-the-dark Boo Bear T-shirt (Boo Bear being a character from 'Care Bears' spoof, 'The Scare Bears').

Way too many great movies to pick from. When I first viewed this thread there were a couple of movies that popped out in my head.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High; Just One of the Guys; and The Breakfast Club.

I especially loved Molly Ringwald's outfit in The Breakfast Club. I loved her boots and the pink and brown ensemble. If I thought it would look good on me I would wear that outfit even today. It is a timeless classic.

Also you can't forget about the opening sequence of Sixteen Candles. The ripped jeans, with boyfriend and girlfriends hands in each others pockets. Wacky colors and hairstyles. That is a movie that totally epitomizes the 80s! Rock on Valley, great topic!

Not really prevalent in the movies, but the look I loved most on guys in the 80's was the guy-as-asexual-dandy inspired by Bowie in the 70's. I could never really pull it off (and never really tried - teenagers couldn't), but these guys did (anyone caught looking like that in the 90's was shot on sight):

 -

 -

 -

 -

 -

 -

Nick Rhodes stole his 'look' from David Sylvian. If I was a chick... I'd want to 'do' them. I've said too much.

However, the look I went for the most throughout the 80's, was the short jacket, jeans, trainers (sneakers) and short flicked-up hair look, that still seems to be a common look today. It was casual, and in the right moments, could look kinda cool. You never knew when you might have to make a break for it, or go on an adventure, so comfortable, durable, stylish clothes were a must!

I know I said it before....but Stephanie from Degrassi Junior High, Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan, Andie from Pretty in Pink, and Janie and Lynne from GJWHF. Dirty Dancing was set in the 50's.....so technically.....technically.....that isn't 80's fashion. [Wink]

Posted by Veronica Sawyer (Member # 2221) on :

I thought about that Earth Angel, but the movie is still sooo 80's, and it did start a lot of trends in the 80's so I think it still counts.

i had to think about mine, because like Pyro, i was just a kid growing up in the 80s. i didn't really have a 'style.' but there are times i wish i would have been a teen in the 80s. [Cool]

much thanks to Muffy & Pyro for helping me figure out exactly who my look would resemble. [Smile]

i mentioned before that i loved Lisa Langois in the movie 1984, which i just saw recently, and i was intrigued. she had some wild outfits in that movie, and i loved how bizarre they were, i'm not sure i would rock certain ensembles she had but some of her clothes were awesome, and not so over done as others.
 -

haha i tried to pull off the two toned hairdo myself years back. blonde on top, with black on the bottom and underneath. i don't think i could do it again, but it was fun!

i have always loved the new wave/punk looks like that of Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons and Debbie Harry of Blondie.

they were so gorgeous to me even though the glare in their eyes says, 'don't mess with me' ..ha [Wink]
 -
 -

i love this picture of debbie..great outfit..that too cool for school look with a touch of bad girl, black, leather.. borderline vixen look.
 -

in all seriousness, i would probably go for something more polished.. like Ellen Aim from Streets Of Fire
 -

Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :

and i love this dress Miss Diane Lane wore as she sang "Sorcerer" in the movie.

 -

Ellen Aim & The Attackers - Sorcerer

haha chatting with Muff & Pyro,.. Jem & the Holograms were brought up.. i used to love that cartoon. the Misfits crew had more of a punk look than than Jem's girls but even for a cartoon, the fashion was great! my favorite was Stormer's original outfit. she was part of the Misfits but she had good in her. i like the flower in her hair to show she had a sweet side. [Wink]

I'm really digging your post Ronnie. [Cool]

I was really into the whole punk/new wave look on the ladies too. Still am in a way. And yeah, I figured Jem was a good example of said look. Hence why I bought it up. Even for a cartoon, there was some great 80's fashion sense put into that show. And i'm really liking your examples in Debbie Harry and Ellen Aim too. You pretty much nailed the type of stuff I definitely liked in those examples.=)

Awesome Stuff Everyone! [Cool]

Pyro, I am digging your pimpin' hat. I had one almost just like it in the 80's. I wore it to a graduation party, and my best friend had one too, but hers was blue with a black band. I love hats too, and since it is cold here in PA about 8 months of the year, I always look for a chance to wear a hat.

Posted by Pittsburghgirl (Member # 7514) on :

I don't have any movie character in mind, but this was my style back in the 80's: leggings, long blouses, tight straight leg denim on occasion and denim minis for casual dress (high school and college classes). When we went out to bars/nightclubs or even to our frat parties, I wore dresses or a mini skirt with matching blouse. For my graduation from college, I wore a black and white checked mini (small checks) with a white blouse that had matching checked bows overtop of the buttons on the front, white stockings and black flats. That was one cute *** outfit that I always got complements on.

Logan .. I agree with Ronnie on the pics you posted. Entertaining style choice indeed.

And speaking of Ronnie.. Ellen Aim is just a brilliant selection for her. And that clip from "Streets of Fire" is just awesome in so many ways! [Cool]

Hey.. did anyone else notice the Earth Angel sighting? [Smile]

Great picks Miss Ronnie and dang a EA sighting and she goes and picks on someone for picking Baby's fashion looks....oh snap! haha

I just told EA today she needs to show up more [Smile]

Veronica that mall link is hilarious! I wish more people would uncover stuff like that....going to malls was such a big part of my life growing up. It was where you wore your best outfit and paraded at the Orange Julius.

Debbie Harry and Ellen Aim look like they were custom-built in a lab that makes sexxxxxy!

This thread has some fashion-tastic pics! There's so much style the Rewind is going to start growing two-tone hair!

Speaking of which.... a haircut I used to really like, but never dared imitate... this time on a laydee:

Muffles! How can our man-girl-boy-woman love ever survive?!

Poison could get away with it on the basis that they were a rock group, and the fashion was clearly there to pick up chix... um, I mean... it was all about the music!

And Logan and Muffy, every time I come back here, it's like visiting the family homestead....home is where the Marty is [Smile]
