So as I was going through the top 20 I realized a few things: (Remembering I teach math)
1) As Paul has stated the sample size of 21 was too small to make an accurate judgment... now 100 people, that makes a Family Feud Survey legit.
2) I believe Valley said there were 211 different movies chosen, so that means that out of 420 total possible movies, 209 selections were repeated one or more times. So to make the top 20 either: a) You had a movie that appeared on the average on 10-15 different lists. If I were to take a stab I'd say 16 candles probably was on the most. Maybe 16 lists? Valley, fill me in. I'd like to also know the movie that was on the most lists that didn't get in. b) You were on a few lists but ranked highly. If 6 people ranked the Lost Boys in the top 5 that's anywhere between 120 and 96 points. That's a lot of points. c) Remember not everyone has the same 20 movies. So option b is extremely important.
3) A long time ago, I was watching an Episode of Married with Children when they did "My favorite Married". My friend Joe called up and told me to put it on an preceded to list all of the episodes HE thought were going to be on it. But it's their show, so it's was their selections. So their choices, much like ours with this poll run into 3 subcategories. a) I picked that too. (regardless of position you are happy) b) Crap, I forgot about that. (My feelings on Aliens, Back to the Future, and a few others that people selected) c) Movies that are specific to you. That deep in your heart weren't going to make it. ( I didn't think that Evil Dead 2, Die Hard, Moving Violations, or Krull was going to get in, but you asked MY opinion. I also did a rush job and didn't research as much. Hey I love Caddyshack 2 too, that someone else picked, but it's not going to make this list. It's specific locally, not globally).
4) I think the movies selected were good, and indicative of the people that frequent this website. I was curious to see everyones #1 choice, because that is probably the one that you wanted to see on the list the most. I mentioned to Valley that the top 3 should have been weighted more, but it was his BBQ, and he makes the menu, so that's cool with me.
5) Much like the NCAA tournament, things get left out. I think the Genre Wars were going to be better, because it's easier to think about each 80's genre than every movie ever made.

Caddyshack 2 I mentioned. I definitely wouldn't have expected it to get on the list and if someone asked me if it was a good movie I would probably have to say no, but as I am sure you know it is very funny while at the same time being quite pathetic. Randy Quaid is so good in that movie.

Devo .. I'm glad you have an interest in all of this and discussion can be healthy. Please take everything I'm saying as my opinion and not in any way an attack on your ideas.
There is obviously a debate going on about the Top 20 results regarding sample size and how the poll was scored.
Everyone wants as big a sample size as possible, but we are in a closed environment with only so many folks. So in my opinion, 21 is not a bad sample.. and yes we could have picked up a couple of more by waiting an extra week, but probably not as many as one might think. And definitely not the 100 for the family feud lightening round.
And as far as scoring.. if you score the poll in any other way than even increments with your #1 being worth 20 points and your #20 being with 1 point... you are skewing the poll. And to unevenly weight a poll there must be a reason.. is it because the Top 3 are more important to you? But what about me where only the top 1 matters.. then I'm overly weighting 2 more movies that don't mean as much. So drawing the correct line at where to unevenly weight a poll seems tricky to me.
In the end, the results are the results. If we had more people participate it might move a few movies around, but overall.. the top 10 to 15 would still be on the list. Example.. Billie Jean posted her/his top 20 after the polls closed.. look at movie #2 on the list.. it's "The Lost Boys" worth 19 points. None of the other top movies are on the list.. thus "The Lost Boys" widens its lead. And just to let everyone know.. "The Lost Boys" has a fairly large lead on #2 "Sixteen Candles" already.
People have been asking for the results of the 2005 poll.. I'm getting ready to post them on the Rewind poll thread.. I think the similarity in some of the choices might be shocking.

Ok Devo did you write this during class??? i'm sure you made a whole diagram for the class that day about a "fictional" 80s movie website poll, right? did it have us as stick figure numbers?
I'm not super technical....haha but I think the Rewind poll totally showed our averages on the Rewind as what we all feel are our favorite 80s movie on the Rewind....of course anywhere else they'd be totally different and predictable right???

it would be really interesting for people to tell us all what criteria choices were made on. I ummed and arrrd for ages what to do and finally decided to use the following criteria to make my choices
(1) Which movie have i watched the most - this is a pretty good indicator that you really like the movie duuuuhh!
(2) Which movies affecte me the most at the time i watched them and how long did it have an affect for in the shorter term.
(3) Which films did i feel most nostalgic about
The cinema photography, story or actors had nothing to do with my choices.

oneyedwilly, i used those same criteria's for myself.
my top movies, were movies i had seen so much as a kid, and they just stuck with me, or had some kind of an effect on me, and became nostalgic to me, for when i think of my childhood, i think of these movies and can pin point where i was when i first saw them...etc.
they also became movies that i made sure i owned even if i had to splurge on the vhs tape
with that said, here was my list.
1. aliens 2. valley girl 3. halloween II 4. return of the living dead 5. purple rain 6. back to the future 7. 16 candles 8. modern girls 9. eddie & the cruisers 10. midnight madness 11. footloose 12. spaceballs 13. monster squad 14. clue 15. streets of fire 16. night of the creeps 17. just one of the guys 18. fire with fire 19. real genius 20. poltergeist

RESPONSE TO ONEYEDWILLY......
When I compiled my list of top 20 I was thinking, not of what is "most popular or well known movies" (no brat pack movies.) but which movies are most nostalgic to me? Which movies do I watch each and every time its aired on television? Which movies did I make it a point to own? I own all but two movies on my top 20 list.
I shared my list with some friends and family. They were surprised that Ghostbusters was not on the list. I told them it was. For some reason…I was ashamed to find it was not on the list. Point being some of us may have forgotten an awesome movie to add to our list. It happens.
So I revised it. LoL. Ghostbusters as my number 4. I also had to bump out Hello again and My Chauffeur. Because a few other movies I like more are: License to drive, Moving Violations and Police Academy. Those movies I can watch over and over again so make them on my top 20. I will respond to GENRE WARS. Thanks for reading.

I'm going to tell you that my criteria wasn't basic, but the movies that I chose were: A) Movies that I loved as a kid. B) Movies from every genre that I could. (I mean really, I did watch Friday the 13th part 4 and the Evil Dead 2 that much.) Movies that I still love, and movies that I quote often. There are definitely subs that I would have made, but I think it's tough when you are trying to be fair. I mean I left out Ferris and the Goonies, mostly because I watched them so often when I was 12, they aren't something I want to watch now.

My criteria was more or less the same, but...

In my opinion, those things are essential parts of why a movie was most-watched / had the most impact on people. When we look at most people's lists, we can see that with one or two exceptions they are all universally considered 'great' movies (within the Rewind) - acting / writing / directing, etc.
