Hi,

Can anyone suggest to me movies which feature 80s' nightlife: streets, bars, nightclubs, British or American, either specifically or incidentally?

So far I have:

After Hours
Bright Lights, Big City
The Terminator
Barfly
Mona Lisa (Kings Cross)
An American Werewolf in London (Picadilly Circus)

More obscure films would be interesting too, (even crap ones!):

Weekend Pass

and even some 80s TV shows too:

Miami Vice

Thanks!

Thanks. Modern Girls sounds interesting – an out-all-night story which sounds like it might have quite a bit of atmosphere just to soak up, just being there. But wouldn't you know it, it's not on dvd! I'll check out the others too.

The opening shots of Pretty Woman are a favourite of mine, released in 1990 but actually shot in 1989. I love that whole neon-lit, candy-coloured world of 80s' streetlife at the beginning.

This might be bending the rules a wee bit, but how about "Urban Cowboy"? Or does going to a country-western nightclub/bar count as "nightlife" for you?

The Runnin' Kind (1989)

Never Too Young To Die (1986)..does the Incinerator count ?

aTomiK showed a photo of the 1980 Al Pacino movie "Cruising".

If you are not familiar with the movie, the 'nightlife' depicted is centered on gay bars.

The film was picketed by a number of gay & lesbian activists when it was first released in theaters.

I've ordered Fear City on dvd and The Angel Collection on dvdr (seeing as the original dvds are about 75 quid). Looking forward to checking them out. Angel looks great.

Here are three other movies and one TV show that have not been mentioned yet...

(1.) The Eddie Murphy/Nick Nolte movie "48 Hours" has a few nighttime bar scenes. Actually, it's a redneck country bar!

(2.) "C0cktail" (1988) with Tom Cruise and Bryan Brown. New York City and Caribbean bar. IIRC, Tom had to be trained by a real-life bartender for the drink-mixing scenes.

(3.) "Flashdance" with Jennifer Beals. Parts of it take place in nightclubs.

(4.) There was a short-lived TV series in 1983 called "Casablanca", based on the classic 1942 movie with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. It takes place at a restaurant/nightclub run by Rick Blaine (David Soul). I think it ran only seven episodes.
