"Feelings, Feelings.. nothing more than feelings!"

The Sure Thing!

'It could be tonight,' he thought as he stood in the corner, pretending to have a good time. He would meet her tonight. All his young life, he had dreamed of a girl like this. 5'6, silky hair, trim, nebile body. Nubile, by the way, is spelled with a "u"..... Trim, nubile body that really knew how to move. And soft, deeply tanned skin. Now as for personality traits, she needed only one. She had to love sex and all the time. To arrive at this moment, he had traveled vast distances enduring many hardships. Abject poverty, starvation, show tunes, you name it. From across the room, he saw her. She was perfect. He knew almost nothing about her and she didn't know much more about him. It was exactly how it was supposed to be. He brought her to his room. The lights were soft, the moment was right. Then she leaned over and whispered in his ear, 'Do you love me?' Thoughts raced through his mind. Did she really want him? What had he done to deserve this bounty? Does God exist? Who invented liquid soap and why? 'Do you love me?' Staring into her eyes he knew that she really needed to hear it but for the first time in his life, he knew these were no longer just words and if he said it, it would be a lie. 'Do you love me?' she whispered. 'Do you love me?' It would not be tonight. The answer was no."

TKO will have to expand upon this thread because I know "The Sure Thing" is his fav 80's movie.  I've always been a fan of this gem, but I actually hadn't watched it in years for some reason.  So I broke it out the other night for some reflective 80's fun and it did not disappoint.

 -

Let's start with the plot:

John Cusack plays Walter "Gib" Gibson, a self-involved college freshman who makes plans to head to California after the urging of his best friend (Anthony Edwards) about a "sure thing" played by Nicollette Sheridan. Likewise planning her coincidently westward journey is co-ed Alison Bradbury (Daphne Zuniga), a control freak who has a wealthy, stuffy fiancé at the same college.  Unfortunately, Gib and Alison aren't on the best terms due to an awkward encounter recently, but they now must share a ride to get to their destination.

"The Sure Thing" is a great roadtrip movie.  Cusack and Zuniga deliver such engaging performances that you're pulling for them to wise up and discover one another from the very first scene they share together.

So many great moments in this flick.. the pool, Gib's roommate's paper read aloud, Tim Robbins, the bar scene, the dream sequences, the rain/shelter, Anthony Edwards, and the ending to name a few quickly...

The main reason that I watched this movie is .. "Because I'm the kind of guy that likes to live on the edge"

TKO and others?

I've owned this movie since it came out on VHS and then bought the DVD. I probably watched it over 100 times and still love it. I still use quotes from it to this day but no one ever gets the reference.

I've only seen this one a couple of times and could never really get into it. It's on my cable's OnDemand free movie list right now so maybe I will give it another shot. It's been awhile since I've watched it.

I love The Sure Thing!!!

Zungia and Cusack do have a chemistry from the beginning and that's what makes it so believable and it's a funny movie!!

Gib delivers so many great lines and he's the awkward type guy you can't help but love.

I love when they fall asleep together to wake up cuddling and that's the moment they both realize they like each other and Gib runs out to the porch haha

Great movie - love the scene where Gib acts like a crazy man to save Alison from that creepy guy who picked her up on the side of the road. I don't really care for the whole Anthony Edwards/California girl stuff - definitely the weakest parts of the movie. How about the part when Zuniga gets to her boyfriend's house and asks for a beer? Good stuff [Big Grin]

Just watched this, and I have to admit I have no idea why I couldn't get into it before?? Loved every minute of it this time. Probably one of John Cusack's best performances ever. I was cracking up over Daphne Zuniga's boyfriend's suggestion for having a good time, "I'll give you 50 extra points!" [Smile]

Veronica.. I actually think "The Sure Thing" is a movie you appreciate more as you get older. I've always enjoyed it, but like you just discovered.. it is even better watching now since Cusack, Zuniga, Edwards, and Robbins have had brilliant careers. I love John Cusack's early films such as "Class", "Sixteen Candles", "Better Off Dead", and this movie.

Do you have the special edition DVD, Valley? If so, is it worth buying?

I wish I could answer that question, but I don't own it. Really enjoyed watching on one of the HD channels the other night for the first time in quite awhile.

I ordered it, so I'll let you know what I think after I watch it [Smile]

It has a Rob Reiner commentary (his commentaries are good, but a little dry). And it has some modern making of docs which feature the cast. It's a good DVD.

Thanks, Logan! I'm looking forward to watching it.
