I was recently at a comic-con in Chicago digging through original 80's movie sountracks. They were all $40 each. In looking at ebay and amazon, the prices get a little better, but amazon doesn;t have everything and I don't really like getting into bidding games with people (too much energy).

Does anyone know of a great lead to find original 80's soundtracks inexpensively? I just got The Karate Kid on i-tunes, but lost my purchased library once when I didn't back up to my external drive, so I would really like to just own the hard copy disc.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated & Thanks!

Earl I've always wondered this too and if someone has the answer?? I'm betting Ebay is the way to go. I go to Goodwill/antique/ thrift stores all the time......what kills me is I NEVER find music.....albums, cassettes, cd's rarely ever. [Frown] I think music is just a bigger collector. so there is a bigger market?

Posted by Secret Admirer (Member # 3574) on :

Earl: Unless you can find it used at a local record store (if you still have any nearby), ebay and amazon are usually your best bet. However, at this point most things from the 80s are already marked up and we consumers are getting gouged like crazy.

Muffy: I agree with you, I think there are more music collectors out there, so the demand is higher.

I have been listening to the Date With An Angel soundtrack a lot lately. It's like WOW! so good.

Great thread!

Earl, I've used this site, but only for some '80s scores rather than soundtracks, but still a good source.

http://www.lalalandrecords.com/

Pork Pie Mcfly - This is a personal favourite s/t of mine, great '80s sounds, go synthesizer!

 -

Also the three Miami Vice soundtracks are really good, the Jan Hammer score is also worth a listen!

Devolution here,

I bought this recently for 5 bucks. I doesn't do anything for me. I think that's because the movie doesn't do anything for me either.

WE are DEVO

Muffy & Secret Admirer - Thanks for the feedback! This is why I so need to live in New York or Chicago and not Dixon, Illinois where our claim to fame is Ronald Reagan boyhood home and zero record stores [Mad]

I am only about 90 minutes from downtown Chicago though, so maybe one of these days I will take a day and go exploring.

Bodhi - Awwwwesome soundtrack: To Live and Die in LA. This is one of the ones I am definitely looking for...I saw it on i-tunes and may just have to go ahead and get it and simply get better at backing up my music right away!

Thanks for the help all...greatly appreciated!!! - Earl

p.s. - You're right on one thing...we are getting killed on CD prices...awesome link too Bodhi...thanks for that!

Honestly Earl, Amazon is probably your best bet. If you do get to Chicago, check out Reckless Records, they have a pretty good selection of 80's stuff. Kinda expensive though.

No problem Earl, it's a really great album, if you're ever getting chased in your car (and hopefully you won't be!) play tracks 5 and 7, I'm sure it will increase your chances of getting away! [Wink]

Devo surprised you don't like it, and the movie too! Is it the surprise, down beat ending?

AtoMik great list! Near Dark is a great score! John Carpenter's scores too but hard to come by..

I love 'Less Than Zero' score too, Point Break, Tango & Cash... so many.. I think we should all move over to the '80s music section!

I definitely don't get into movie scores as much as I do the various artist soundtracks, but once in a while it's fun to kick back and listen to the instrumentals.

Here's something cool. Have you guys ever heard a soundtrack before watching the movie for the first time? I did this with Thief Of Hearts. I had the soundtrack way before I ever watched the movie. I love that soundtrack, so I got to know the songs by heart, and then when I finally watched the movie for the first time, it was a really cool experience. I think I enjoyed the movie even more because of it.

Yeah, there were some pretty cool soundtracks also in the early 90s.

Navy Seals, Ford Fairlane, Bill & Ted´s Bogus Journey, Days of Thunder,
Don´t Tell Mom the Babysitter´s dead, Highlander II, If Looks Could Kill, Point Break etc.

Here´s another 80´s soundtracks thread i think you should visit.

John Carepenter is so talented. Although I don't think that he can read music, he does a bang-up job with his scores. They are so distinctive, nay legendary. A friend of mine, who is the biggest Carpenter fan in the world (he actually tries to defend "Village of the Damned" as a good movie--he's hopeless), actually has a copy of the vinyl "Big Trouble in Little China" by Carpenter's group, The Coup de Villes. I think that he could get huge dinero on ebay for that because I believe that Carpenter only had 500 copies or so of it pressed, and he gave them out to friends as a Christmas gift or something.

Wow, that really is a collectors item.
I love The Coupe de Villes song and music video on the Big Trouble in Little China dvd.

My friend who loves Carpenter reports from the Toronto International Film Festival that Carpenter's "The Ward" is outstanding, a return to pre-90's form for JC. Sadly, a Los Angeles judge would not let JC out of jury duty to attend the world premiere of his own movie this week!!!

i have been waiting for THE WARD. read a bit about it and was wondering when it was going to be released.

I don't know when "The Ward" is coming out. It played Toronto, but I don't know if it was picked up by a distributor for U.S. and Canada.

I want the Heavenly Bodies soundtrack.

It would be really something that could then go with the film.
