Ok, so as some of you may have gathered, I am a HUGE BTTF fan....hence the name and location
Well, I (and Valley) thought that it was about time a BTTF thread reared its beautiful head (thank goodness I still have my hair).
So.....what do you (if you do) like about it??? I love the feeling I get when I watch this that I had when I first ever saw it...the feeling that this could happen, that you could go back in time in a failiure of an Irish sports car and experience life in a different era, the adventure, the magic the gorgeous MJ Fox runnin around....I just love it.
As an adult, noticing little things like twin pines/lone pine mall and realising that there was a new Jennifer in the sequal (why did I not notice that as a child)...Flea!!! Billy Zane!!!! MANURE!!!
So come on....lets hear your views?

Earth Angel...BTTF is a movie that had me laughing and enjoying from start to finish. I've always been interested in the concept of time travel and what it would be like to journey back in time.
It is crazy to think that Eric Stoltz was the original Marty McFly...I like Eric Stoltz, but the change to Michael J. Fox was such the right move.
One thing that I always thought was brilliant was how in the beginning of the movie Marty was like a normal guy stuck in a dysfunctional family and then after he accidently changes the past ... Marty is the one that appears to be the dysfunctional family member.
I remember meeting Earth Angel years ago and thought ... what an awesome screen name. Since then I've realized through her posts and others that know her .. it's not just the screen name that is awesome!
Oh... one other thing. If you guys ever have kids and one of them when he's eight years old accidentally sets fire to the living room rug... go easy on him.

It's a really well written movie with great characters, a great score, and some nice ideas about time-travel and how people relate to their parents. Throw in some effects a hit song and a cool car, sprinkle with some 80's dust and you've got a timeless classic. Which, considering it's set in '85 and that's key to the plot - is no mean feat!
I have an incredibly dull BTTF story: When this movie came out I was desperate to see it, I has stickers all over my wall and was really excited, which was kind of unusual for me. For some reason I couldn't persuade my Dad to take me, but I begged and begged for weeks. Eventually he relented and took me. When I got to the cinema the lady at the counter told me the film had closed the day before! I was heartbroken! She said there was a new comedy film with the same actor that had just opened, so I ended up seeing that. The film was of course, 'Teen Wolf'! I loved it, but I've always had a little piece of me missing as a result of not seeing BTTF at the cinema.
Same thing happened with 'E.T.' It was full and I ended up seeing 'The Dark Crystal'.

Oh boy, I have had a love affair with BTTF, since I first saw it in theaters back in '85. The plot of the movie is so well-constructed. As Earth Angel alluded to, repeat viewing is rewarded with those little "Ah-hah!" moments, like the Twin Pines Mall turning into the Lone Pine Mall after Marty's trip back from 1955.
To me, Christopher Lloyd totally steals the show, and the comedy is top-notch. I love the inside jokes, like the discovery that Uncle "Jailbird" Joey prefers never to leave the confines of his crib.
The soundtrack is awesome - "Power of Love", "Back in Time", and "Earth Angel" are a few of my faves, and the "Back to the Future Overture" has become a classic movie theme, IMHO. I can't get enough of this movie.
That said, the only thing about this movie that let me down is the sequel. I don't mind part III as much as I mind part II. Overall, part II is incerdibly disappointing, but that has more to do with the fact that original was so brilliant.

Like saturnchick...my two words are 'Christopher Lloyd'. Enjoyed all of the characters, but Doc Brown was so bizarrely entertaining it just made the futureboy journey that much more pleasurable.
BTTF is so easily identified by so many ... think...
DeLorean...Flux-Capacitor...Calvin Klein...88 MPH...Enchantment Under the Sea Dance...Pepsi Free...Marvin Berry...1.21 Gigawatts...
There are rumors of a Blu-ray release in 2010...I so hope it is true.

I was 12-13 when Back To The Future came out...when life was all about chillin' and watching movies with friends. As you can see in my profile, this is one of my all time favs. Suprisingly, I've never watched either of the sequels, although I own them both. Ditto re your comments about Doc Brown...every one of his scenes were great.

Earth Angel I love this post! and I too notice so many things as an adult I never noticed in many 80's movies why I love watching them so much more now!!

Great posts everyone and yeah that all applies to me! More than anything though, I loved it for its none more equal 80's-ness! This wasn't just a movie that you walked into and saw on the big screen. It lept off and came out into the world with all of us I think. The Power of Love was always on the radio as you were going down the road.
Two-tone colored Jean jackets started popping up on everyone at school that fall as well as white Nikes with the red swoop were flying off the shelves and suddenly everyone knew what a gigawatt was! I loved it because it became part of the zeitgeist and we all ended up living it. It became a part of our youth like few other movies have since.
It also has one of my all time favorite quotes from almost any movie ever:

Being the car nut that I am, the cars were an important part of the attraction to the movies for me. BTTF introduced me to the DeLorean. I had never heard of the car before then, though I'm sure that's the same for most people. In that respect, BTTF: 2 was my favorite for all the futuristic cars (though most of them were gussied up Ford Probes).
Last February my wife and I stayed at the Plaza hotel in Las Vegas which doubles as Biff's Casino in the alternate 1985 in BTTF: 2.

As kids, my cousin and I got into a heated argument about that. I told him they were different girls, but he just KNEW they were the same.
Back then, I always thought the original Jennifer (Claudia Wells) was the better looking of the two. After all these years, though, Elizabeth Shue has aged MUCH better than Claudia.

One thing you may or may not know: the role was originally given to Melora Hardin, better known lately as Monk's late wife, when Eric Stoltz still had the role. Once Michael J. Fox was brought on board, they noticed Hardin was about a foot taller than him, decided they didn't want Marty to be dating someone that much bigger than he, and thus very reluctantly recast.
What can I say that hasn't been said here already? It's about as perfect a picture from my point of view as you can get. Everything just clicks perfectly, including of course Alan Silvestri's picture perfect score, definitely a candidate for the best instrumental theme for the decade. Only Del Griffith ranks higher than Doc Brown on my own list of favorite characters, and it is to the Academy's detriment Christopher Lloyd wasn't nominated for best supporting actor that year. The technology is absolutely believeable, the humor perfect, the romance works, and the climax genuinely thrilling (it's a cliche that the heroes will blurt out while trying to save the day, "We've only got one crack at this;" in this case that's quite true for once, and they milk it for all it's worth, working much better than the initially conceived nuclear blast ever could have, really). What more could a film lover ask for, really?

I remember first seeing this movie in 8th grade right around the time it first came out. They showed it too us in study hall in school. We only got to see about 20-30 minutes at a time and I couldn't wait to get to school the next day to see what happened next. I loved it right from the start and still do. It really is a masterpiece of how it was written with the time-travel storyline. A gem!

Watching BTTF Part II.. It is on Encore WAM. I own the DVDs, but couldn't pass it up once I found it. It doesn't compare to the original which I watch on a 10 to 1 ratio I would guess. Still lots of fun though.
