I'm on my way to Club VooDoo in an effort to help track down the infamous Bruno X!

"Modern Girls" totally captures the 80's club scene and it has a stellar cast with Clayton Rohner, Daphne Zuniga, Virginia Madsen, and Cynthia Gibb.

The soundtrack is loaded with awesome tunes. My fav tune from the movie has always been "Passion" by Lions and Ghosts.

 -

I got the opportunity to ask Virginia Madsen recently if she swiped the lips phone and that incredible pic from CeCe's room. She said 'nope, but she loved that phone!'.

The scene with CeCe & Bruno X is a fav:

(The tune "Weak in the Presence of Beauty" in background)

"I think you should put that out...   Why? ... Cause you might start a fire!"

That Floy Joy track is pretty awesome! Very smooth. The whole soundtrack is fun to listen to! [Smile]

Fantastic movie overall, I love the ending. In fact, this is probably my favorite 80's flick that I never saw in the 80's.

Watched it for the first time maybe 5 years ago on cable. Watching it in HD earlier this year was pretty epic [Big Grin]

I just watched this again the other day because someone in another thread asked a question about the different colored shoes they were wearing. Great soundtrack indeed. In fact, it was from this movie that I discovered TKA's - One Way Love. Of course it never hurts to have 3 hot babes, especially when one is the lovely Madsen. Rohner was awesome in all his 80's work as well.

About 5 months ago, I got a 1/4 of the way through the movie before my son woke up early from his nap...forgot about it until now. I'll try to watch again soon, and will definitely start from the first.

very nice....the guys have love for this movie. [Smile] welcome to club voodoo. [Wink] sorry, that was cheesy, i know haha.

yes valley, YOU MIGHT START A FIRE is a great line from this movie. clayton was hot as bruno x.

one of the best soundtracks for an 80s movie.
i too, love weak in the presence of beauty, passion and of course, depeche mode's but not tonight.

i know a lot of people like madsen, but i was more of a cece and margo fan. cece's style was awesome.

Ronnie..Hi!..When did you get here? ha

Might suggest that you use the facilities at The Gloom Room because Club VooDoo is having issues.

Don't tell Virginia Madsen this since I'm acting like we are best friends, but I missed the two movies back in the 80's that I now love her in.

And Kevdugp73 - definitely watch this movie again...at 1/4 you haven't even gotten to the best parts yet.

WolfmansGotNards - you are so right about this flick in HD!!

80'sRocked - your analysis is one of the reasons I love "Modern Girls". I mean wasn't it every guy's dream to go out adventuring with three girls and have one of them fall for you by the end of the night?

But Not Tonight

I STILL have not watched this! It's on my DVR. Gotta see it now... [Smile]

This is my New Year's party vibe must watch recommendation.

This flick captures a night out clubbing in the 80's like no other...go find it!

Clayton Rohner AND Virginia Madsen?? Why haven't I seen this yet?? Someone needs to deliver this movie to me ASAP.

"Modern Girls" is one of those hard to obtain out-of-print hidden gems. If you have MGMHD or Reel tv.. it occasionally can be found showing on there. The majority of the people (Muffster excluded) that have watched it totally love it.

So what I'm trying to say is: If the opportunity presents itself .. watch "Modern Girls"!

Just watched it for the first time, recorded it off of REELZ channel.

I love Rick Morehouse, so his playing double roles was awesome. I know I will dig it more and more each time I watch it.

Bruno X....LOL

Actually Cliffy is longer than Cliff..

Watching "Modern Girls" right now before I go out with friends later in search of Bruno X.

Loved the girls bedrooms.. like I wouldn't for some reason.. I liked how they reflected CeCe's and Kelly's personalities. Also, check out the Bruno X poster on the wall as CeCe is deciding what to wear this evening. Oh and that pink boombox is totally 80's!

Valley, you know my affinity towards this movie!! I remember buying it a few years back and not knowing anything about it...just that I recognized some of the cast and thought why not?!?

Oh my, what a little gem of film! It has become somewhat of an obsession for me. The soundtrack had me hooked from minute one! I bought a vinyl copy and had it transfered to cd, but as you know, the official soundtrack is missing many songs, including the Bruno X song, "Safare."

In the last year, I found someone online who actually had the more obscure music featured in the film. I was able to "procure" myself a copy...lol [Smile] !! So great!!! From Icehouse's "No Promises" to Chris Isaaks's "Dancin'," the music doesn't disappoint.

"Passion" by Lions & Ghosts is one of my favorites. It is reminiscent of a Psychedelic Furs song and it is married perfectly to the scene where they slowly pan upward from Kelly's pink stilettos to the white pantyhose with the little design in them (which incidentally I used to wear in the 80's), the pink beaded dress & of course her totally gorgeous face & beautiful blonde curly hair! Boy, Brad sure was a fool...lol!!!

I too love the way they showed the girls different personalities by the look of their rooms. The Roy Lichtenstein mural in Ceecee's room is rad! And the lips phone in Kelly's room is awesome!!! Perhaps it's all the little details you pick up throughout the movie everytime you watch it that makes it total 80's eye candy!

Thanks for starting this thread Valley...I'm thrilled to see some other folks on here who love it too & remember...

Yep, this one has been a favorite for a while. It was one of the first movies I ever converted to dvd, maybe the first. Lots of fun and a killer soundtrack.

edit: Oh, and it's got Tommy Hamilton in it from Gimme An F, sweeeet [Big Grin]

Cindy Mancini.. love the details you mentioned .. especially the Roy Lichtenstein mural in Cece's room. So awesome that you know that.

The soundtrack is incredible! I'm pretty sure that Ronnie has every tune except one obscure song she has been searching for.. I couldn't score it either.. I tried Ronnie.

I know Veronica Sawyer has seen "Modern Girls" since this thread was created, but she must have commented about it on another thread. She actually got up at 5am one Saturday morning just to watch it on MGMHD.

Secret Admirer.. I have it recorded on at least three DVDs .. and I have it recorded on two different HDDVRs. I would love for it to get the Blu-ray treatment, but since it didn't even make it to DVD.. I just don't see it in my future.

Speaking of watching it.. it is on MGMHD again Tuesday 8/10 at 10:15am. Set your DVRs now.

Posted by Secret Admirer (Member # 3574) on :

Whoa Valley, you are covered for now with all those copies. But don't give up on the blu-ray. If there's one thing we can take away from these 80s movies, it is to never give up! (cue the montage) [Smile]

Posted by Veronica Sawyer (Member # 2221) on :

Valley, think I should call in sick to watch it on Tuesday? haha....I still need to get a DVR!

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Veronica.. a DVR will change your movie watching life. Totally amazing! Plus, that fake cough you are using at work today to set-up tomorrow won't be needed anymore. My HDDVR is loaded with 80's movies in HD that have yet to get a Blu-ray release .. Modern Girls, Night of the Comet, Some Kind of Wonderful, Just One of the Guys, The Heavenly Kid, Secret Admirer.. to name a few!

ok....I've always promised on here i'd give this another viewing so i'm gonna make it my "fall asleep to" movie tonight. I liked it before....I just never LOVED it like everyone else does haha

I just remember some parts being so slow going???

Well folks I will take notes and get back to you..... [Smile]

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Muffy, I think I've figured out why you aren't fully enjoying "Modern Girls".. your approach will all wrong.

"Modern Girls" is not a movie you should watch when you are tired and wanting to fall asleep. Instead it's a movie you should take a nap about 7pm and set your alarm to wake you up to watch it around 10pm. It's about stay up all night and going on a clubbing adventure with your friends... so the right frame of mind can really help the moving watching experience as well.

But please tell your neighbors to be ready because when the soundtrack starts kicking.. so does the volume on your remote!

Posted by Muffy Tepperman (Member # 1551) on :

Valley my "fall asleep to" movies aren't necessarily when i'm tired and wanting to sleep it's just means it's my late night pick.....I save for when i'm snuggled up on the couch and not going A-D-D and can give it my full attention! better?

so here we go folks..........

I still like it....not love it and here's why:

The movie always loses me after the first club and Bruno leaves.

I know this is the point of the characters....but the girls are so self obsessed/self involved it bothers me and it distracts me away from ever liking them.

I love Cliffy of course.....you can't help but fall for the guy and feel sad for him. I screamed and didn't want him to kiss Margo at all!!! I was like noooooo. What did she really do to become a "better person"? Even when he was giving his speech I still thought she was a bitch...haha

I may be the only one to say this (I like Virgina Madsen) but I don't think she was striking in this movie.....it was the character I tell you.....the weak girl who falls for the stupid man. I kept thinking to myself that she looked like a bird.....then she even made a bird call in the backseat and I rolled laughing (in a mean girl) kind of way [Wink]
 -

I wanna know when they get out of the car in the rain and that famous mural of the classic movie stars in the theater? is that still there? it's featured in alot of movies isn't it?

I hope I don't disappoint lots of people.....there's something that makes me not LOVE this movie......and you'd think I would???

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

Muffy.. I appreciate your honesty and not just saying you enjoyed it because several of us really like this flick.

On the surface "Modern Girls" appears to be some of what you described regarded the self-centered attitude of the girls.. but as the movie progresses you realize they truly are friends and would do anything for each other. Think about the how they went back to rescue Kelly, the conversations while walking to get Cliffy's driving instructor car, and even the ending with Cece & Bruno X.

btw Muffy.. are you sure it was only 10 points?

Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :

lol!!

i loved muffy's review. because i can totally see where she's coming from in her breakdown of the movie. and she's right. if i had watched this movie today, for the first time, i would have thought all of those things too. but the fact that i grew up watching it, and the mark it made for that time it was released, makes me love it. i used to love that cliffy and margo got together. but ya.. she was a bitch..and she picked on cece a lot, who seemed to be the funnest one, and most light hearted. margo was more the 'adult', if you will. and kelly was definitely the one who needed the attention from the guys.
the club scenes are my favorite thing about the movie, along with the music. well, that and bruno x and his scenes with cece. very cute stuff!

i personally, never thought virginia madsen was pretty at all in this movie, so to me.. the character of kelly just seemed like a desperate one?? cece was cute and i loved her clothes. margo was probably misunderstood to a point, because she was more of the grown up one, looking after the other 2 girls... i think. and maybe cliffy saw that in her?

sorry to analyze the movie so much, i never thought about that stuff until now, after reading muffy's post haha.
i love the end when the girls are standing there together, with cliffy, and bruno x's plane is taking off, while But Not Tonight starts to play. good way to end it! and they all survived the night, and came together at the end. [Smile]

now it's time for me to watch it again [Big Grin]

Awesome Ronnie! I'm glad I made you laugh and made you analyze it in a different way ha!

I'm so happy no one hates me yet for not loving it [Smile] I did try real hard to justify why I felt the way I do haha

I think the movie actually picks up nicely at that point. Cliff realizes that he's in it for the long haul and accepts it, and the girls really start to take to him and open up.

I really enjoy the Bruno X music video shoot out on the street. Especially when the dancers just dump Cliffy on the ground when it's a wrap. That's my main man, Martin Ferrero, playing the video director.

Those snap shots are just incredible pics! They truly look like they are having a blast making the movie.

I think Tiffany mentioned watching it for the first time recently on here somewhere.. what did you think about "Modern Girls"?

Posted by Muffy Tepperman (Member # 1551) on :

I want to know the story behind those shots? Is it someone who worked on the film or something? backstory please? link? [Smile]

Posted by cindymancini (Member # 679) on :

Whoa, Ronnie & Valley, those pics are a helluva find!! Love them! When I met Cynthia Gibb, I had her sign my VHS of Modern Girls & she told me they had SO much fun making the film because basically, they were out shooting all night in Los Angeles & would just have a great time & then wrap at like 6 a.m., get some sleep & then do it all over again the next night. Gotta love the firsthand scoop [Smile] !

But before I go, I have a question, it occurs to me that the fountain the cast is standing in that first picture looks very familiar...could it be the same one used in the Go Go's "Our Lips Are Sealed" video? Hmmmmm....

Devolution here,

Cindy, I'm gonna say probably, I mean really how many fountains are cool enough to have water fights in?

Anyone else go out and purchase the HUMPE HUMPE album after seeing it surface in "Modern Girls"?

 -

Obscure? In 1985, for some reason, Warner Brothers records released the debut album from two sisters from Germany that called themselves HUMPE HUMPE.  "Yama-ha" was the song that first caught my attention from the album, but I now like several tunes from the album.

The sisters went on to rename their group "Swimming With Sharks" in 1987 and had two singles you might remember "Careless Love" and "No Longer Friends".

Watched this one again recently thanks to Netflix and still loved it. I really feel like CeCe and Cliffy are the heart and soul of this movie. The other two girls are great but just not as fun in my opinion. The Kelly storyline kinda dragged the movie down in some ways.

The music defintely keeps the movie going. Love that Bruno X song Safare, and of course But Not Tonight by Depeche Mode.

The producer of this movie, Anita Rosenberg, went to a screening of Modern Girls recently and she said that Meg Ryan and Sarah Jessica Parker both auditioned for the role of CeCe but were both rejected because they weren't "pretty" enough. Crazy, huh? Also, the movie was originally supposed to be called Party Girls but was changed to Modern Girls because of an article written in Playboy about these girls in LA that frequented all the clubs.

Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :

Good job, Veronica! Great tidbits. I always thought the title of the movie was strange..the word 'modern', I mean.

I'm also in the mood for this one again. [Smile]

Posted by skatexedge (Member # 5712) on :

Sarah Jessica Parker is NOT pretty now. She was ok back then but I'm glad she didn't get the role.

Posted by Veronica Sawyer (Member # 2221) on :

Ronnie, I agree about the title! It's kinda misleading in a way...When I think 'Modern' I think of modern art or something and this movie is so not about that haha.

Skatexedge, I'm happy too that Cynthia Gibb ended up playing CeCe. I like SJP but Cynthia was so cute in that role and really made it unique. Meg Ryan would've been over the top ditzy I think.

Is this where Cliffy tells Cece that he reads Playboy for the articles? [Wink]

Actually after checking out the article .. the title "Modern Girls" seems perfect for the film now. However, I must admit that I originally missed this movie in the 80's.. probably because of the title.

Ronnie.. those behind the scene pictures above are just freakin' awesome and totally have me craving another late night viewing of "Modern Girls" again soon. [Cool]
