well it took me over 20 years to watch this movie but i finally did. (streamed it on netflix to my computer this morning) [Wink]

i loved it! i never knew the star of this movie was matthew modine?!
i had read on imdb that a lot of people loved the first half of the movie and didn't care too much for the second half. for me, i felt the opposite...

**spoiler** -
i thought the scenes with pyle were "meh"...
i knew that he would end up snapping and kill that drill instructor. which was surprising because i'm no good at predicting stuff when it comes to movies. i'm gullible that way.

oh and btw, i loved the scenes with the DI..that guy cracked me up!

i instantly recognized the guy that played mother. actually, i mistook him for the guy that played the leader of the sociables in the outsiders..but then i figured out he was from my bodyguard. i loved this character!

it had great lines and made me laugh. i gave it an 8/10.

now, i need to see platoon and good morning vietnam. i am wayyy behind on my list!

It's a good movie overall. But I must admit that my favourite part is R. Lee Ermey spewing colorful, condescending phrases in the face of the grunts! his dialogue is so damn hilarious!

Funny to note that Lou Gossett's character in Officer And A Gentlemen (who came first) has almost the same dialogue (or part of it) in the beginning of that movie. Maybe it's standard tirades of the US military, I don't know. It's just a little weird!

I love Full Metal Jacket. Great movie! Ronnie, I didn't like Good Morning, Vietnam at all. Platoon was okay, but I liked FMJ better.

I literally just walked out of my store and just bought this along with The Alamo, Apocalypse Now & The Dirty Dozen. Loved Full Metal Jacket!! I know what you mean about the movie having two "halves" quite clearly. The weird thing is that everybody thinks the first half is funny (me included), but in reading interviews with Kubrick, his intention couldn't have been further from the case.

I think the same thing happened with Gran Torino & Clint Eastwood. I think representation of real life and a directors ability to capture such can be so bizarre as to be laughable and skirt comprehension. Anyways, yeah, i loved both parts of the movie. The sniper reveal at the end was too much!
