This could have been a late 70s to 80s movie. I was really young when I saw it, so what I remember is kind of vague. It was about a young boy, either Greek or Italian. He had problems with his father, who always seemed to be hard on him. His favorite escape was hanging off a branch of a tree that hung over a cliff. The last scene I remember is where he was hanging off the branch and it broke and he fell, then I think we see him in the hospital. Any guesses?

Sounds a bit like "Lady in White" to me. I know it's off the wall, but it just may be what you're looking for...

Nope, it's not Lady in White, or Birdy. But thanks though. The search is still on.

Here's another stumper:

I seriously can't remember much, I don't know if this was in the late 70s or early 80s. It was about a black soldier who goes to India and befriends this young Indian boy. The scene I remember most is when the soldier is leaving, the young boy leaves with him and carries with him a new pair of shoes. Not much to go on, but we've all worked with less [Smile] Thanks.
