I felt that it did not live up to its potential, the story of the Boy who wishes anything he wants was the highlight. The gremlin on the airplane was potentially good but not enough to grasp the Horror.
I know the project served much controversy with the deaths and lawsuuits. But Wish they remade other classic stories from Rod Serling.
Living Doll To serve man are amongst the stories that could have been done by landis, spielberg and hooper.

I rewatched this movie not too long ago, maybe at the beginning of January and I enjoyed it.The opening sequence is KILLER good.
My favorite segments are "Nightmare at 2,000 Feet" and "Kick the Can". My least favorite is the now-infamous segment with Vic Morrow.
Overall, the movie's entertaining, but it's lost some of the charm that I felt when I watched as a kid.

That Gremlin on the plane freaked me out when I was younger. No wonder I don't fly anymore.
I have to watch this again it's been so long. Can someone tell me what scene Vic Morrow was in? Apparently Jennifer Jason Leigh's dad died in a horrific accident while filming it and don't know wether the scenes were used or not.

The first two segments were decent, the third segment reminded me of the second half of "Explorers" which was disappointing. But hold on..... the final segment with John Lithgow was enchantingly haunting. Let's put it this way, I still sneak a peek out my window to check the engines of the plane whenever I fly at night.

Riptide...Vic Morrow is in the entire first segment, where the main character (Morrow) is transported back to Nazi Germany, the Vietnam War, etc. As jdocster mentioned before, the accident occurs during the scene when Morrow is in the Vietnam jungle.
If the scene had been filmed all the way through, it was supposed to play out as his character's redemption scene, where he rescues two Vietnamese children from certain death. In real life, one of the stunt helicopters got too close to Morrow. The two children, along with Morrow, were decapitated by the blades of the helicopter propeller. Subsequently, there was a trial involving John Landis (the director of the segment) who was eventually acquitted of manslaughter. A while back there was a video footage on YouTube that actually shows the gruesome death of Morrow and the two children. Not sure if the video is still circulating, though.
p.s. I had NO idea that Jennifer Jason Leigh was Morrow's daughter!

Thanks for filling me in on more deatails Saturnchick. I think the surviving families got some millions in a lawsuit and there was some stink about child labor laws as well due to the accident.
As shame about Morrow, I liked him in a lot of things. Wondering since the accident was July 1982, if JJL had already shot her Fastimes scenes by that point.

saturnchick, that was one gruesome but excellent account of the events. I have never been able to fully appreciate this movie due to what happened and how shocking it was that they still released the film with that segment.

I kept my horse right next to where they filmed the helicopter scene. We would hide in the bushes and watch them film McGiver, China Beach, and the Twilight Zone movie. The day the crash happened we all rode over there and it had been totally cleaned up. Any idiot would have seen how close to the cliff and water it was to film that scene. Very sad thing to happen.

Watched Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) yesterday. Last time saw it way back in the 80s.
Itīs a decent film but itīs a mixed bag and tries to please everyone.
Prologue
This was a decent appetizer but nothing more.
First segment ("Time Out")
Great segment directed by John Landis! Loved the story and Vic Morrow shines in his last role. Too bad what happened to him and those two kids. What a tragedy!
Second segment ("Kick the Can")
Average story, typical sentimental Spielberg, like straight from the Amazing Stories. Scatman Crothers was once again very good though.
Third Segment ("It's a Good Life")
This is weird and wonderful segment directed by Joe Dante. Always nice to see Dante regular D1ck Miller on screen and i loved Kathleen Quinlan!
Fourth segment ("Nightmare at 20,000 Feet")
If you are afraid to fly, donīt watch this one. Fantastic performance from John Lithgow plus Abbe Lane and Donna Dixon were beautiful. Director George Miller was on fire during the early 80s.
all in all, not a perfect film but still an important movie because while it was not the enormous hit which executives were looking for, it was still a financial success and it helped stir enough interest for CBS to give the go-ahead to the 1980s TV version of The Twilight Zone.

"Twilight Zone: The Movie" was, overall, a decent flick - and almost seemed to intentionally set up the later excellent re-done version of the TZ TV series (1985 - 1989). Didn't see this film until around 2007-ish, however.
I felt the first segment w/Vic Morrow (Time Out) to be the best; very disturbing story about racism/bigotry, with a chilling ending. Extremely tragic about the deaths that occurred as a result of this segment. I remember reading about this in the paper back in '83, as a kid in middle school.
"Kick the Can" - alright but unimpressive re-make of the original '60's TZ episode.
"It's a good life" - wow, this was truly bizarre - even for the TZ. Strange & trippy, and somewhat reminded me of the original TZ episode about the kid who could imagine anything he wanted & make it reality. My second-favorite segment in this film.
"Nightmare at 20,000 feet" - very weak, watered-down version of the original Bill Shatner iconic TZ episode - which remains one of the best episodes in the original series.
