It was one of those troubled youth movies, and I was very young when I saw it so I don't remember much. In the scene that stuck with me, our main character faces a gang or group of guys that has it out for him. I don't remember what their beef was. They stood in two lines and he walked between them, getting beat, stabbed (like running a gauntlet)... it was pretty bloody, I don't know if he even survived. From what I remember, he wasn't fighting back, he was just taking it. There was also a female character that was concerned for him.
I know my description is pretty vague, but if this rings any bells with anyone, please help!

Wow, there is a scene in that one that looks a lot like what I'm talking about. I guess this must be it! Just that for the past 20 + years that I've replayed this in my head, he was a caucasian guy. That might explain why I had such a hard time finding it. That, and the fact that I was searching in the wrong decade.

How about "Bad Boys" with Sean Penn? I agree with Journey that "3:15" could be another one to check out.

I had at one point considered both Bad Boys and 3:15 as possibilities, and either one may still be it. 3:15 in particular seems to have the look and feel, but I haven't been able to confirm if that specific scene is in it. Unfortunately, there's no DVD release. Maybe someone on here with the VHS can confirm?
I'd never heard of Walk Proud, but I don't think that's the one after seeing the trailer.
To tell the truth, I'm starting to think I created this whole thing in my head. If I can find one that has the scene from Sonny Carson, the story from 3:15, and the actors from Bad Boys, that would be perfect.

Walk Proud has a scene very similar to the one you describe. Robby Benson plays a mexican gang member. When he realizes that the life style is no longer for him, he gets jumped out (similar to how you described it above).
