This movie - instead of featuring actors and actresses - features REAL LIFE singers/rappers/mixers/graffiti "artists"/breakdancers etc. I'm sure to a lot of people that gives the film "street cred." Personally, for me it felt like watching Ameteur Night at THE APOLLO.
Actually, for a breakdancing movie I was appaled at how LITTLE dancing there was in this thing!
The main charactor is a graffiti bomber, who no one (not even his best friends and girlfriend, knows is the infamous "ZORO", one of the best graffiti artists in the city. One day this white woman journalist who likes BLONDIE comes to the Hood to interview this fool ad=nd a few of his friends to find out about the whole Hip Hop Sub-Culture. So he takes her to this rinky dink little club and they watch all his friends perform...you know: like we see in all these breakdancing movies- and right about HERE I turn to my husband and say "This isn't very good, is it?" and he shakes his head and says "No" (and he usually LOVES breakdancing movies!) So we started drinking beer and hung in there hoping the movie would get better, hating the movie every step of the way.
So "the guy" (we forget his name) gets hired to paint a big professional mural for a park...and when he finally starts to do it (which I think his girlfriend considers "selling out") he finds he cant garner inspiration. He has painted two hands reaching out (symbolizing "The Artist") but he can't quite think up what to put in the middle. Girlfriend (whose screwin around with half the town , by the way) disses him some more and THAT is when he has this great epiphany! He has the hands reaching out on both sides of a STAGE and in the middle he has this huge gala event where all his friends from The Hood rap, sing, dance etc. etc. etc.
Yeah, I hated it.Like I said from the start there was nothing professional about it. Even the breakdancing scenes weren't too impressive and illy concieved.
I couldn't wait for this movie to end.

Watched Wild Style (1983) and what a fantastic time capsule it is! Yeah, the story is so-so and the acting quite amateurish but you have to take these kind of films for what they are. This movie screams AUTHENTIC!
While i´m not into rap music (was back in late 80s, early 90s) and have never made a single graffiti, i enjoyed the film very much. I have the scandi dvd but would love to get the 25th Anniversary SE version.

Never heard of this one aTomiK...might have to track it down. As stated in another post, just got Breakin + Breakin 2 on Blu-ray....maybe a break dancing movie marathon in store....I also have Beat Street and one more (with a blue cover...can't remember the name right now). Also have the Breakdance LP which came with a big poster...proudly displayed in my retro room!
