I might have asked this question before but i cant remember.

I have weird science on video and on dvd (john hughes box set)
and while watching the dvd the other day i noticed the soundtrack is different from the video version. What the hell is that all about?
In the scene where robert downy jr and that other guy first see lisa the song pretty woman is playing but in the video version the weird science theme song is playing. Which is the original ? and why the hell have they changed the music it doesnt make sense.

If your DVD is the "High School Reunion Collection" version then it has the original music soundtrack, the first release of the film on DVD had a remixed soundtrack because of legal issues with the music used.

It was the same thing when Sixteen Candles came out on video. The soundtrack was different from the version that played on HBO & was in the theaters. Back then they didn't license the music for the home video release, only for the theatrical release, so rather than pay for the song twice they would just change the music.

I dont think its the high school reunion collection its just called John Hughes Box Set: The Breakfast Club / Sixteen Candles / Weird Science. I dont think its the original soundtrack because the music used "pretty woman" just makes the scene look odd, but i could be wrong

There have been a number of 'special' releases over the years - not just of Weird Science but also the other greats like Sixteen Candles, TBC, Ferris Beuller etc.

The reason for the change is exactly as stated - costs of licensing the music for different venues / release formats.

What you'll get now are the original movie theater release soundtracks.

I actually enjoy the new versions now, because often they remind me of the time when I first saw the movie on its first release all those years ago.

Well it might be the original i never got to watch it at the cinema as i was only about 5 at the time. Maybe it just sounds odd because im used to the video version
